Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody highlighted the areas five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) did well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He said that they have recruited well and also pointed out the things they need to rethink for the next season of the league.

Ahead of the IPL 2023, not many gave Mumbai Indians a chance to qualify for the playoffs, especially after their inexperienced bowling lineup in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. To worsen the case more, even Jofra Archer after playing a few games was ruled out of the tournament. Their batting too didn’t look good at the start as most of their players struggled with form.

However, Mumbai Indians replied to all the critics in style as they displayed a magnificent brand of cricket. Their young guns came into the party and along with seniors they set the stage on fire. They scripted their name in record books as they chased 200+ targets four times.

Young pacer Akash Madhwal filled in the shoes of Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer as he bowled exceptionally well and pick wickets both at the front as well as in death. Their collective performance saw them reaching the playoffs. The Rohit Sharma-led side dominated Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator but they couldn’t go past the challenge of Gujarat Titans in the Qualifier 2.

Tom Moody said that Akash Madhwal and Cameron Green were the two worthy investments for the Mumbai Indians. He hailed their recruiting team for their efforts. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo.

He said: “Mumbai Indians have recruited well picking up local gem in Akash Madhwal who was relatively unknown. He was trusted and given an opportunity and he delivered for them on a regular basis. The high-priced Cameron Green was an investment very well worth it, along with the return of Suryakumar Yadav’s form that was quite sensational.”

IPL 2023: “They need to review their overseas bowling options” – Tom Moody On things Mumbai Indians need to rethink next season

Tom Moody further pointed out that Mumbai Indians need to rope in some good overseas fast bowlers in their squad as there’s no guarantee about Jofra Archer and also Jason Behrendroff is just a power play bowler. He also said that the five-time champions need to provide support for Piyush Chawla in the spin bowling department. He elaborated:

“They need to review their overseas bowling options, they’re no guarantee with Archer’s recurring elbow injury. Behrendroff had a good season taking 14 wickets but he’s primarily a powerplay bowler so they need some overseas death options. Piyush Chawla has an outstanding season but he can’t do it alone, they need more spin options from overseas or try to discover new domestic spin talent.”

With the kind of display, Mumbai Indians displayed this season, the return of Jasprit Bumrah will be a big boost for them next season. It’s fair to say that with the kind of talent they have in their squad, they will be a dominant force next season.
