IPL 2024 Auction: Punjab Kings Coach Trevor Bayliss To Miss BBL Match For IPL Auction

To participate in the IPL 2024 auction on behalf of Punjab Kings, BBL franchise Sydney Thunder head coach Trevor Bayliss will miss the upcoming match against Adelaide Strikers. Shawn Bradstreet, who is Bayliss’ assistant will be the team’s interim head coach for the next BBL match.

Trevor Bayliss did the same in the IPL 2023 auction and traveled to India in the middle of the BBL 2022-23. In a statement issued by Sydney Thunder stated:

“Bayliss is due to return for the Thunder’s clash against Melbourne Stars in Albury later this week.”

However, this is not the first time that IPL coaches have missed cricketing leagues to participate in an IPL auction. It was the current RCB head coach Andy Flower, who did the same in early 2022 whereas Australian head coach Daniel Vettori didn’t waste time to catch his flight for India after the conclusion of the first Test against Pakistan. Vettori is the head coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting was also not part of the Channel 7 commentary panel during the fourth day of the AUS vs PAK 1st Test in Perth.

Trevor Bayliss has had a fine campaign in the Indian Premier League as a head coach as he led the Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL trophies. Bayliss was also appointed as the head coach of the England Cricket Team and won the 2019 ODI World Cup with them.

Trevor Bayliss was named as the head coach of Sydney Thunder in BBL 2021-22 and took them to playoffs in both the editions he has coached so far. However, he was not able to change the fortunes of the Punjab Kings as the franchise was once again not able to cross the league phase barriers in the last season.

Trevor Bayliss once again must end PBKS’ IPL title drought and help them win their first Indian Premier League Trophy. Opening up on his plans for the IPL 2024 auction, Bayliss told Punjab Kings’ in-house channel.

“We don’t think we need to strengthen up a whole heap. But I suppose the possibility of strengthening in two or three areas we think will make us a stronger team next year… We want to play a positive, aggressive brand of cricket so we’re looking for players to come into those two or three spots with that type of mindset.”

Ahead of the IPL 2024 auction, certain players such as Travis Head, Mitchell Starc, Shardul Thakur, and many more players will go under the hammer and will want to attract buyers. All these cricketers have immense potential to deliver on the big stage and have showcased the same while playing in the previous editions of the Indian Premier League and International Cricket.

Gujarat Titans are expected to bring in a lot of big names on board as they have the highest purse ahead of the IPL 2024 auction. Titans will aim to find a replacement for Hardik Pandya after he was traded to Mumbai Indians.
