Mitchell Starc became the highest-ever player in the Indian Premier League after getting a deal of Rs. 24.50 crore in the IPL 2024 auction. However, cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has highlighted that players like Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are getting unfair prices in IPL.
Aakash Chopra also feels that there is a fault in the system in IPL auctions. Mitchell Starc was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs. 24.50 crore. The Australia pacer returned to the tournament after IPL 2015. Australia pacer Pat Cummins was another player who broke previous records to grab an IPL deal worth Rs. 20.50 crore by Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Jasprit Bumrah Is IPL’s Best Bowler: Aakash Chopra
On his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra noted that Mitchell Starc will get a whopping Rs. 7.6 lakh per delivery if he bowls his full quota of over across 14 games. He also added that Jasprit Bumrah is IPL’s best bowler but he will get far less price than Mitchell Starc.
“If Mitchell Starc plays all 14 games and bowls his full quota of four overs, each ball will cost ₹7,60,000. Astonishing. But here’s a question. Who is the world’s best bowler?”.
“Who is the IPL’s best bowler? His name is Jasprit Bumrah. He gets ₹12 crore and Starc almost 25. That’s wrong. I don’t grudge anybody’s money. I wish everyone gets paid a lot but how is this fair?”, Aakash Chopra said.

Virat Kohli Is Worth Rs. 42 Crore, Jasprit Bumrah Worth Rs. 35 Crore: Aakash Chopra
Aakash Chopra feels that Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are getting paid less for following their loyalty to their franchise. The former India opener feels that if they both leave their franchises to join the auction, they will get hefty amounts.
“It’s the Indian Premier League. How is one getting paid so less and the other so much? Loyalty is royalty. If tomorrow, Bumrah tells MI ‘Please release me and I’ll put my name in the auction’. Or if Kohli says the same to RCB, their prices will rise, right?
And that’s how it should be? If this auction market decides that Starc’s price is ₹25 crore, then it will also decide that Kohli should be worth 42 crore, or Bumrah 35 crore. If that isn’t happening, there is a fault,” Aakash Chopra further added.

Virat Kohli Has Rs. 15 Crore Deal With RCB
Interestingly, Virat Kohli is part of Royal Challengers Bangalore and has a deal of Rs. 15 crores with his franchise. Similarly, Jasprit Bumrah has a contract of Rs. 12 crore with Mumbai Indians. Both these players are associated with the same team since their debut season.
Meanwhile, other than Mitchell Start and Pat Cummins, Daryl Mitchell (Rs. 14 crore), Harshal Patel (Rs. 11.75 crore), Alzarri Joseph (Rs. 11.50 crore) and Spencer Johnson (Rs. 10 crore) were a few other costly picks during IPL 2024 auction. All the 10 franchises spent more than Rs. 230 crore during the auction to grab 72 players.
