Chennai Super Kings opened their account in the ongoing IPL auction 2024 by securing the services of New Zealand’s batting sensation Rachin Ravindra.

The five-time IPL champions were in search of a top-notch batsman following the retirement of Ambati Rayudu and did not wait long to bid for Rachin Ravindra as soon as his name was announced. The New Zealander had registered himself at a base price of Rs 50 lakhs.

They soon faced competition from Delhi Capitals as the price for the southpaw went past the Rs 1 crore mark before Punjab Kings joined the race too. Chennai Super Kings, however, did not give up and eventually got their man for Rs 1.80 Cr.

Rachin Ravindra was widely tipped to earn a huge IPL contract after his scintillating display in the World Cup. In Indian conditions, the New Zealand youngster showed remarkable composure and maturity to lead New Zealand’s batting charge. He finished the World Cup as his team’s highest run-scorer and fourth in the overall list.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that he has become the poster boy of New Zealand cricket. In 10 games in the World Cup this year, he scored an impressive 578 runs with the help of 3 centuries and 2 half-centuries. A handy spinner, the southpaw also picked up 5 wickets.

Rachin Ravindra has already represented New Zealand in all three formats. He has played 3 Tests, 23 ODIs, and 18 T20Is so far and has scored close to 1000 runs with the help of three centuries and as many half-centuries. He also has 32 wickets in international cricket.
