Former England skipper Nasser Hussain is hoping India’s star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant can make a successful return next year and has suggested that one of his young teammates will elevate his game in 2024 and reach the superstar status. Rishabh Pant has been out of competitive cricket since he suffered a nearly fatal car crash at the end of last year.

However, the wicketkeeper-batter is on the road to a strong recovery and is likely to return to competitive cricket before next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup which is scheduled in June and is to be jointly hosted by the West Indies and the USA.

Nasser Hussain is a big fan of Rishabh Pant and his attacking philosophy. He wants to see the talented 26-year-old return in time to make an impact in 2024. Rishabh Pant is likely to return during the IPL 2024 where he will be leading the Delhi Capitals. He led the franchise in the 2022 season when they finished fifth and missed out on the playoffs just based on NRR.

“That was such a serious accident. The whole world held its breath and it has been a slow recovery,” Hussain said. “You follow on social media, on my phone and the initial first walking steps to the scenes in the gym and then scenes of him playing a bit of cricket, scenes of him with Ricky (Ponting). I traveled with Ricky in the summer in the Ashes, and Ricky was texting him ‘How’s the progress coming along’, and he is a box office cricketer.”

KL Rahul stepped up to keep wickets for India in the absence of Rishabh Pant and has done an excellent job behind the wickets as well as with the bat. KL Rahul amassed 452 runs at an average of 75.33 in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and was one of India’s standout performers in the World Cup.

KL Rahul Has Replaced Rishabh Pant Behind The Wickets

“India have done well without him (Pant) as KL has come in and been brilliant in all formats,” Hussain noted. “They’ll continue to be brilliant. They’re lucky to have both of them, but Rishabh Pant, before his injury, was box office, and hopefully, after his injury, will be box office as well.”

While India has a plethora of strong batting options at their disposal, Nasser Hussain has tipped that the 24-year-old Shubman Gill will thrive in 2024 and beyond as he attempts to take his game to the next level and become one of the biggest players in the world.

“He (Gill) had a very good three quarters, or nine-tenths of 2023. You must have learned so much having the likes of Rohit Sharma at the other end,” Hussain said. “He just fell away maybe at the end. Maybe that illness, you know, just got to him a little bit, and he’s formed just in a month. We take it far too short when we’re in the broadcasting world. He’s a super talent, and he’s going to be the next sensation for India for years to come. So, hopefully, he’ll have a good 2024.”

India missed out on winning the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 by just one step as they failed to win the finals against Australia. However, they will get another opportunity to win an ICC trophy when they take part in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
