IPL 2024: Sunrisers Hyderabad Sack Brian Lara, Announce Daniel Vettori As New Head Coach

Sunrisers Hyderabad, on Monday (August 7), announced the appointment of Daniel Vettori as their new head coach ahead of the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).  The former New Zealand captain has replaced Brian Lara as the SRH coach.

Daniel Vettori has ample experience of the IPL, having plied his trade in the tournament as a player as well as coach in the past. He began his IPL journey as a player in 2008 with Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) before signing up for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011. He was later appointed the captain of the team too and played for them till 2013.

Ahead of the 2014 IPL season, Royal Challengers Bangalore named him as their head coach, a post that he held till 2018. During his tenure, the Bengaluru-based outfit made it to the final in 2016. In 2019, he took charge of the Dublin Chiefs in the first season of the Euro T20 Slam cricket tournament although the competition was canceled.

He was later appointed as the bowling coach of Bangladesh. In 2021, he was appointed as the head coach of the Caribbean Premier League franchise Barbados Royals. In 2022, Australia roped him in as an assistant coach. Daniel Vettori has tons of experience as a player and a coach and SRH will be hoping that he helps them turn their fortunes around.

The Hyderabad-based franchise has performed poorly in recent IPL seasons. They have not made it to the playoffs in the last three IPL seasons and have not won the tournament since 2016.

SRH sack Brian Lara and appoint Daniel Vettori as head coach:

While announcing the appointment of Daniel Vettori, SRH also announced that they have parted ways with Brian Lara. The West Indies legend was appointed as the head coach by SRH in September 2022 and was in charge of the team for this year’s IPL.

Brian Lara, however, failed to make any impact as SRH finished at the bottom of the points table in the 10-team competition.

Meanwhile, SRH are not the only franchise who have changed their coach ahead of the next IPL season. Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore have also changed their head coach before IPL 2024. While LSG have roped in Justin Langer, RCB have appointed Andy Flower.
