Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting praised young opener Jake Fraser-McGurk during the second T20I match against England. However, Ricky Ponting mentioned that he hasn’t seen much of Fraser-McGurk since the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, where he played for the Delhi Capitals (DC).

Fraser-McGurk played under Ricky Ponting for the Delhi Capitals in this year's IPL. The right-handed batter scored 330 runs in nine games at an exceptional strike rate of 234.04. It is worth mentioning that the Delhi Capitals management signed him as a replacement for Lungi Ngidi for the IPL 2024.

Jake Fraser-McGurk Is Going To Make A Lot Of Money - Ricky Ponting

During commentary, Ricky Ponting said that Jake Fraser-McGurk is likely to be retained by the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming auction, which could boost his earnings early in his career. Ponting also said that Fraser-McGurk still needs to work hard and could eventually play Test cricket for Australia.

"In the IPL, how's he kind of dealt with all of that a little bit?" a commentator said.

"It's a good question because I haven't actually seen much of him since the IPL. I love working with him and coaching him. He's a great kid. He works really hard on his game, but things have happened so quickly. There's an IPL auction coming up in probably November or December," Ponting said.

"There's every chance that the Delhi Capitals will offer him a retention. He’s going to make a lot of money really quickly early in his career. Still, he's not the finished product yet and has to work it all out. I think he can eventually play Test cricket for Australia eventually," he added.

Jake Fraser-McGurk Becomes 2nd Youngest Australian To Score T20I Fifty

The right-handed batter made his debut during the T20I series against Scotland earlier this month. Fraser-McGurk was dismissed for a duck in his first T20I match. He scored 16 runs off 16 balls in the second T20I match before being dismissed for a duck again in the third and final T20I match.

The 22-year-old was dropped from the first T20I of the three-match series against England. Matthew Short opened alongside Travis Head during the series opener. However, Fraser-McGurk got a chance to play in the second match in place of skipper Mitchell Marsh, who missed the game due to illness.

Jake Fraser-McGurk scored 50 runs off 31 balls with the help of two sixes and four boundaries. Australia, led by Travis Head, reached a total of 193/6 in 20 overs at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. The batter became the second-youngest Australian cricketer to score a half-century in T20 Internationals.

It will be interesting to see whether Fraser-McGurk will retain his place in the playing XI if Mitchell Marsh returns to the lineup for the third and final T20I, which is scheduled to be played at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on September 15, Sunday.
