Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction last year, the Capitals had appointed former India cricketers Hemang Badani and Venugopal Rao as their head coach and director of cricket, respectively. While Hemang Badani replaced Ricky Ponting, Venugopal Rao took over the role performed by Sourav Ganguly for the Delhi-based franchise.
Vijay Bharadwaj also joined the DC camp as Head Talent Scout. The DC revamped their coaching staff after the IPL 2024 season to bring fresh ideas and experience to help the team strategize better and achieve success, as they have not yet won the title.
The rise of Matthew Mott as a coach
Speaking about Matthew Mott, he is one of the most experienced and successful domestic and international coaches going around the world. He has had a fascinating coaching journey so far.
Mott started his coaching career in Australian domestic cricket, leading New South Wales (NSW) to victory in the Sheffield Shield (2007-08) and also won the inaugural Champions League T20. He also guided Glamorgan to the Champions League T20 title.

The former pacer also worked with Australia at the 2010 World T20, Ireland at the 2015 World Cup, Australia Under-19s, and Kolkata Knight Riders in the first two IPL seasons in different capacities. But the real breakthrough he got was with the Australian women’s cricket team.
Matthew Mott enjoyed record-breaking stint with Australia Women
Under Mott’s coaching tenure, Australia Women won two T20 World Cups, one ODI World Cup, and four Ashes series, and they also enjoyed a 26-match winning streak in the 50-over format. Mott then joined England as the white-ball coach after seven record-breaking years with Australia women.
He helped England to win the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, but the 51-year-old was later fired as the white-ball head coach after Jos Buttler and his team’s poor ODI World Cup campaign in India in 2023. Later, the former Australia and England coach joined Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Sydney Sixers on a three-year deal as assistant coach last year.
As a player, the former left-handed batter has 3723 runs in 66 first-class matches and 452 runs in 24 List A matches to his name. The seamer also has 13 wickets across the two formats. Notably, DC will kick off their IPL 2025 season against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on March 24 in Visakhapatnam.
