IPL 2025: Mega auction to be held in November or December? Report reveals

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has started doing rounds as the preparations for the tournament are already on even though the event is far away. But even before that, the attention will turn towards the auction, which will see a mega auction taking place this time around.

The IPL 2025 auction is just around the corner. As per the reports in IANS, it is learned that the bidding event for the next edition of the league will be taking place in November end or early December this year. The venue for the event is yet to be decided.

The reports also claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will also be releasing the rules for the retentions, including the Right to Match (RTM), in the next couple of days. There have been several speculations about how many players will the team governing body be allowing franchises to retain.

With IPL 2025 set to have a mega auction, there were reports which claimed that the BCCI will be allowing franchises to retain 6 players along with three RTMs. Although there hasn't been any official confirmation, the same has been speculated by many.

But since the dates for the 2025 edition are out along with the BCCI deciding to release the retention policy, the franchises would be keen to plan out their strategies. Speaking about the dates for the auction along with the rules and regulations, a source close to the governing body stated:

"IPL 2025 auction will take place in November end or early December this year. Rules of it will be out in a couple of days."

The original date to announce the retention policy for the 2025 edition of the league was the end of August. However, there was a delay by the BCCI but they informed the franchises as well and reportedly told them that they would be revealing the rules by the end of September.

It was also learned that the Board of Control for Cricket in India will be allowing franchises to finalize their retention decisions until 15th November.

Therefore, the owners of the franchises will be given a lot of time to finalize their players ahead of the next edition.

The franchises, on their end, have kick-started their preparations for the tournament. A few of the teams are on the hunt for coaches as well, and there are a lot of spots to be filled in a lot of franchises ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings became the latest team to announce their head coach for the IPL 2025. Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting has been appointed as the head coach of the team.

Recently, Lucknow Super Giants also announced Zaheer Khan as their mentor while Rahul Dravid joined Rajasthan Royals as the head coach. Teams in Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals are also expected to make announcements soon.
