Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel is all set to take on the role of batting mentor of the Gujarat Titans (GT) for the upcoming IPL 2025.

A Times of India report claimed that the former Indian cricketer will join the Ashish Nehra-headed coaching staff of the Gujarat Titans (GT).

Parthiv Patel's appointment comes after the departure of the South African legend Gary Kirsten.

The former Indian head coach left Gujarat Titans (GT) to become the white-ball head coach of the Pakistan cricket team, leaving a significant void in the IPL team’s coaching lineup ahead of the IPL 2025.

Gujarat Titans (GT) appointed Parthiv Patel as the new batting mentor following Gary Kirsten's exit

Gary Kirsten served as the batting coach and mentor for the Gujarat Titans (GT), and he will now be replaced by Parthiv Patel. The official announcement can be made anytime soon.

With his extensive experience in the IPL, Patel is expected to bring a fresh perspective and valuable guidance to the batting unit of the Shubman Gill-led Ahmedabad-based franchise.

Parthiv Patel’s signing with the Gujarat Titans (GT) as a batting mentor is a nostalgic and strategic move, given his impressive history with the state team. As a player, the former wicketkeeper-batsman was instrumental in leading Gujarat to their first Ranji Trophy title during the 2016-17 season, crushing Mumbai in the final.

Parthiv Patel represents India across the formats

It was Gujarat’s significant achievement under Patel. The 39-year-old represented India across all three formats of the game. He made history as the youngest wicketkeeper to don the Indian Test jersey when he debuted in 2002 at 17 years and 153 days. Patel played 25 Tests, 38 ODIs, and 2 T20Is for India, amassing 1700+ international runs.

His journey in the IPL is also impressive. Patel started his IPL career with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), playing for them from 2008 to 2010. He then moved to the Kochi Tuskers Kerala (now defuncted), followed by stints with the Deccan Chargers (now defuncted), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

The former player also represented Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL from 2015 to 2017. After announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket in December 2020, Patel took up a scouting role with the Mumbai Indians (MI), using his keen eye for talent to help identify new prospects.

Parthiv Patel played for six teams in the IPL

In his IPL career, Parthiv played 139 matches for the different teams and scored over 2800 runs at a strike rate of 120. The former cricketer has 13 IPL fifties to his name along with 365 boundaries and 49 sixes in the world’s biggest T20 league.

He has also made a name for himself as a commentator, providing insights during IPL matches and international games. With his extensive background and a deep understanding of the game, Patel is expected to bring invaluable experience and mentorship to the Gujarat Titans (GT).

Notably, GT finished eight on the points table in the IPL 2024 under Shubman Gill’s captaincy after winning the IPL trophy 2022 and then finished as the runner-up in the next season under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya, who controversially became MI captain earlier this year.
