Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been confirmed for a new role with JSW Sports. Ganguly has been appointed as the Director of Cricket for JSW Sports and will now look after all the cricketing matters of JSW Group.
Ganguly has been removed from the role of Director of Cricket of Delhi Capitals, a role which he was serving till IPL 2024. He will lead all the cricketing activities done by JSW Sports, which includes Delhi Capitals IPL and WPL teams, and the Pretoria Capitals in SA20.
Sourav Ganguly confirmed as Director of Cricket of JSW Sports
Ganguly's appointment as the Director of Cricket at JSW Sports was confirmed by the team owner Parth Jindal and Sourav Ganguly himself. Jindal called Ganguly a part of a 'family' and believes that his guidance will benefit the teams under JSW Sports.
“Dada has always had a special place at JSW Sports. For us, he is family first and then the cricketing icon that he is. I’ve said this in the past and it stands true even today – he is one of the sharpest brains in cricket and we will always stand to benefit from his guidance and wisdom of the sport," Jindal stated.
"I am both humbled and delighted that Dada will now head all things cricket for JSW Sports in his role as Director," he added.
Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly also shared a statement and expressed his pleasure to join the JSW group in a new role.
“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing the JSW Group and the Jindal family personally and professionally which made this an easy decision. JSW Sports has been doing visionary work across the board, and I am pleased to be able to lend my experience to all its cricketing projects,” Ganguly said.
Delhi Capitals appoint new head coach and Director of Cricket
In place of Sourav Ganguly, former India cricketer Venugopal Rao has been confirmed as the Director of Cricket at Delhi Capitals in the IPL. The Capitals also appointed Hemang Badani as the team's head coach from the next season.
However, Ganguly will take part in the IPL auction, though, in a lesser capacity. The former India captain will take part in the auction with JSW head Parth Jindal. However, there are no details regarding the extent of his participation.
Why has Sourav Ganguly's role changed?
Recently, JSW and GMR group, the co-owners of the Delhi Capitals, decided mutually that the IPL franchise will be run by GMR for the next two seasons, in 2025 and 2026. However, the JSW group will run the Delhi Capitals Women's team and Pretoria Capitals in SA20 for these two years.
The change in Ganguly's role is due to his association with the JSW group, which will only get control of Delhi Capitals in 2027. During this time, Ganguly will take care of the cricket operations of the JSW group in which they are in control.
