In what has been the latest development as per the reports in ESPNCricinfo, it is learned that the franchises will be allowed to retain 5 players ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. Not only this but the teams will be allowed one right-to-match card option as well.

The reports also claimed that there will be a major boost for the team in terms of purse for the IPL 2025 auction. Although the exact amount is not known, it is learned that the teams will be allowed a purse between INR 115-120 crore mark, which will be the highest.

There is no confirmation as of yet for the retention slabs. This means that there is no clarity on how many Indian players can be part of the set of retained players or whether there will be a cap on retained overseas players. Some media reports previously claimed that teams would be allowed to retain 3 Indian and 2 overseas players.

If 5 retentions along with 1 RTM is allowed, it will be the highest number of retentions allowed in the history of the IPL. Ahead of the 2018 auction, teams were allowed to pick 3 retentions along with two RTM cards. But ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, the right-to-match option was discarded as teams were allowed to retain 4 players.

In the previous auction, the IPL teams were allowed a purse of INR 90 crore, 10 crore more than in 2017. And this time around, it will be around 25 crores more than the 2022 edition. Therefore, it is expected that the IPL 2025 auction will see massive records getting shattered as well.

IPL 2025 auction will take place in late November.

The reports also claimed that the IPL 2025 auction will take place in late November. The event will be held outside India, most particularly in Saudi Arabia. BCCI had promised IPL franchises that they would be releasing the retention rules by the end of August. But there has been a massive delay in that as well.

The IPL governing council was expected to meet this weekend in Bengaluru ahead of the BCCI's annual general meeting on Sunday. Therefore, it is expected that they will be releasing the official statement on the retention policy anytime soon with the IPL 2025 auction around the corner.

The reports also claimed that IPL is keen to bring the old rule pertaining to capped Indian players who have retired from international cricket or have not played international cricket for five years being categorized as uncapped. The governing body has already announced the franchises about the same.

The rule was discarded by the IPL after the 2021 season. This rule will favor Chennai Super Kings more as it will allow them to retain former captain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player, which could allow them to have a strong purse going into the auction. In 2017, INR 3 crore was allowed for retention of an uncapped player but it was increased to INR 4 crore in 2021.
