In a playful moment at the IIFA Awards 2024 in Abu Dhabi, Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan took a lighthearted dig at the legendary Indian cricketer MS Dhoni over his extended career in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

On the stage with co-host Karan Johar in a star-studded evening, Shah Rukh Khan shared his thoughts on retirement, hinting that if he ever does step away, it will be in the style of Dhoni, who famously continues to push the boundaries of his IPL career.

Shah Rukh Khan jokes about retirement, compares himself to MS Dhoni at IIFA Awards

During the banter with the film director, the King of Bollywood joked about how legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Roger Federer, and Sunil Chhetri know when to retire, and even he suggested Johar call time on his career.

Shah Rukh Khan said to Johar at the IIFA Awards 2024: “The biggest thing about legends... unki khasiyat ye hoti hai ki legends ko maalum hota hai, when to stop, when to retire. Like the great Sachin Tendulkar, like Sunil Chhetri—the footballer, like Roger Federer—the great tennis star. They all know when to retire, and I think it’s time you did too. So please go back. Thank you very much.”

Replying to which, Johar asked Shah Rukh Khan when he would retire, and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) co-owner humorously replied by saying he is a different kind of legend, like MS Dhoni. SRK said: “Actually, main doosre kisam ka legendary hoon. Main aur Dhoni ek kisam ke legends hai. Na..na..na kar ke bhi 10 baar IPL khel jaate hai. I am a different kind of legendary. I am a legend like MS Dhoni. We play 10 IPLs even after saying no.”

This response from the legendary actor left everyone in laughter. Vicky Kaushal, joining in on the fun, said, “Retirements are for legends, but kings are forever!” The playful exchange had the crowd buzzing as Shah Rukh Khan once again proved why he is still a timeless favorite, and now the video is all over the video.

BCCI introduces major changes to IPL 2025 retention policy

Meanwhile, the BCCI on Saturday, September 28, revealed the much-anticipated retention policy ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. Taking to Twitter, the BCCI unveiled several key changes, including an increase in player retention from four to six. One notable update is that the IPL teams retaining six players must ensure one of them is an uncapped player.

In an interesting twist, the BCCI has also retained the uncapped player rule, which now allows any international cricketer who has been retired for over five years to be classified as uncapped. This move could prove highly advantageous for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), potentially paving the way for them to retain Dhoni as an uncapped player ahead of the next IPL 2025.

Dhoni, who led CSK to an IPL title in 2023, had hinted that it might have been his final season, leaving fans in suspense about his future in the league. However, with these new retention rules in place, there’s growing speculation that Dhoni could continue his IPL journey, further extending his legendary career with CSK.
