In a shocking development, Mumbai have suffered a major blow ahead of their Ranji Trophy semifinal against Vidarbha at Jamtha in Nagpur, starting on Monday, February 17. The defending champions will be without star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been ruled out due to pain in his left ankle.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was initially included in India's provisional squad for the much-awaited ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, the left-handed batter was replaced by Varun Chakravarthy in the final squad. He has been named a non-traveling reserve alongside Shivam Dube and Mohammed Siraj.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Ruled Out of Ranji Trophy Semifinal Against Vidarbha
According to a report by Times of India, Yashasvi Jaiswal participated in Mumbai's practice session in Nagpur but appeared uncomfortable while batting. Jaiswal will now be assessed further at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where he will begin his recovery process.
"Jaiswal has been ruled out of the Ranji Trophy semifinals clash as he is suffering from a left ankle pain. He fielded in Mumbai's practice session today at Nagpur, but looked uncomfortable while batting in the nets. It is an old injury which has recurred. He has to leave for the BCCI's Centre of Excellence tomorrow to start his recovery process," a source told TOI.
Mumbai, led by Ajinkya Rahane, will rely on players like Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Shams Mulani, and Shardul Thakur to make it to the final match. Vidarbha, with key players like Atharva Taide, Dhruv Shorey, Karun Nair, and Umesh Yadav, will look to make the most of their home advantage.
Mumbai Unlikely to Name Replacement for Yashasvi Jaiswal
Mumbai suffered a last-minute blow ahead of their Ranji Trophy semifinal against a strong Vidarbha side led by Karun Nair. The defending champions secured their spot in the semis by defeating Haryana in the quarterfinals. Ayush Mhatre and Akash Anand are set to open the innings in Jaiswal's absence.
Mumbai’s selectors are unlikely to name a replacement, as he was added to the squad as the 18th player after confirming his availability. Earlier in the tournament, the young Indian opening batter featured alongside Rohit Sharma in the second-stage opener against Jammu and Kashmir last month.
Jaiswal’s Injury May Force Selectors to Name New Non-Traveling Reserve for Champions Trophy
Jaiswal’s injury could force the national selectors to name a new non-traveling reserve for the Champions Trophy. He recently made his ODI debut against England in Nagpur, where he scored 15 runs. However, he was dropped after Virat Kohli returned from injury and Shreyas Iyer secured his spot with a fifty.
India will head into the Champions Trophy without playing any warm-up matches. The Men in Blue will kick off their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by a high-stakes clash against Pakistan on February 23. They will play their final group-stage match against New Zealand on March 2.
