Past Performances and IPL Titles of the Mumbai Indians
Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians have been one of the most talked-about teams in the history of the league due to their performances and the kind of comebacks that the team has made over the years.
2008-2013
Mumbai Indians have had a star-studded lineup since the first season of the IPL, which included the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya, but were not able to put on a strong performance in the first couple of years, finishing fifth and seventh respectively.
Having said that, MI made a strong comeback in the following season by making it all the way to the final, where they took on Chennai Super Kings to kick off a rivalry that goes on till now.
The 2010 season was the start of what would be the decade of the Mumbai Indians, as the team booked a spot in the playoffs in the next two seasons and went on to win their first IPL title in 2013.
As has been the case with the team, MI didn't start that particular season on a positive note, which resulted in Ricky Ponting handing over the captaincy to a young Rohit Sharma, a decision that changed the fate of the team for good.
2014-2019
The next season saw MI winning three IPL titles every alternate year in 2015, 2017, and 2019, which made it the most successful team in the tournament in terms of number of titles won.
Coincidentally, two of those three wins came against the Chennai Super Kings, whereas the then MS Dhoni-led side wasn't a part of the 2017 season that saw MI lift the IPL trophy for the fourth time.
Interestingly, MI qualified for the playoffs in every edition since Rohit took over as the captain till 2020, barring the 2016 and 2018 ones.
Two of those seasons saw MI script a magnificent comeback after losing five matches in the first half of the tournament to make it to the top four.
2020-2025
The Mumbai Indians are only the second team to defend their title in the history of IPL, and they did so in 2020 with Rohit Sharma at the helm
However, a lot has changed since then, and the Mumbai Indians are still in search of their sixth title, having failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2021, 2022, and 2024.
One of the major and highly debated changes that MI has gone through in this time period is with respect to captaincy, with Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as the captain of the team in 2024.
Although the decision wasn't taken in good spirits by the fans, they seemed to have accepted the fact that Hardik would be leading the side from hereon, which was evident in the way they reacted last season.
Players Retained by Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians have got most of their bases covered with the retention choices that they have made in the form of Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Tilak Varma.
