Former Indian Batsman Gautam Gambhir expressed his disappointment over the release of Indian speedster Umesh Yadav by Virat Kohli-led RCB ahead of the IPL 2021 mini-auction. Royal Challengers Bangalore has released as many as ten players from the squad despite reaching the playoffs in IPL 2020 which has raised a lot of questions. After two successive poor seasons in 2018 and 2019, RCB entered the playoffs last year.

Big names like Aaron Finch, Moeen Ali, Umesh Yadav were released owing to their poor form but the most surprising one was the release of Chris Morris who had been their stand-out bowler in the last season in the few games that he had played. With a lot of young bowlers in the RCB dugout, Morris and Umesh would have provided the much-needed experience in the bowling setup.

“They Have Let Go Of Some Quality Players” – Gautam Gambhir

Gambhir stressed the importance of backing some players in the squad who have performed well in the previous years if not in the last edition. He added that RCB has released a lot of quality players like Moeen Ali and Umesh Yadav from the squad and they will need to add the same kind of quality players into the squad.

“See, one thing is very important. Having someone and having the same kind of season, like some of the players, who performed really well in 2019, 2020.. whether they will have the same kind of season in 2021, you will have to wait and watch. Plus, yes, they would need some quality players because they have let go of some quality players – Moeen Ali and Umesh Yadav for example.” – Gautam Gambhir told on Star Sports.

“Releasing Umesh Yadav Was A Big Surprise” – Gautam Gambhir

Gambhir noted that there aren’t many fast bowlers going around in the circuit that can be picked up by RCB in the auction and was surprised to see the release of the Indian senior bowler Umesh Yadav who played only two matches in last year’s IPL.

“There are not many fast bowlers going around in the Indian circuit at the moment. You’ve got Navdeep Saini who is young, you’ve got someone like Mohammed Siraj, he can go hot and cold in T20 cricket, so probably releasing Umesh Yadav was the big surprise,” Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports show Cricket Connected – Auction Special.
