The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have landed in hot water after allowing New Zealand's rising star Rachin Ravindra to train at the Chennai Super Kings Academy ahead of the three-match Test series in India. Ravindra’s exceptional performance recently helped New Zealand to whitewash India in India.
Rachin Ravindra amassed 256 runs at an average of over 51, including a century in the recent Test series between India and New Zealand, and Chennai Super Kings deserved much credit for this.
Robin Uthappa questions CSK's decision to train Rachin Ravindra at their Academy ahead of Test series
However, Chennai Super Kings'S help for the Kiwi star has sparked criticism, especially from Robin Uthappa. The former India and Chennai Super Kings batter has questioned the five-time IPL champions’ prioritization of loyalty to their players over national interests.
Rachin Ravindra was released by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction; despite this, he was allowed to train at the Chennai Super Kings Academy to adapt to Indian pitches, which appeared to pay off immensely during his stunning performances against India.
Robin Uthappa said on his YouTube channel: “Rachin Ravindra came here and practiced at the Chennai Super Kings Academy. CSK is a beautiful franchise that will always look after its franchise players but a line has to be drawn where the interest of the country comes ahead of your franchise players, especially when he is a foreign player and comes and plays against our country.”

However, Robin Uthappa praised Chennai Super Kings' player-centric approach but felt this support should not extend to players from other nations when it could directly impact India's performance on home turf.
In his criticism, Uthappa highlighted the need for the CSK to draw a line, urging the franchise to reconsider such actions in the future where the national interest is at stake.

The former player pointed out that CSK is widely regarded as a nurturing franchise, but they must curb their generosity for the foreign players, who could turn this training into an advantage against India itself. Despite his critique, Uthappa acknowledged Ravindra's skill.
Uthappa further noted, “I am not surprised that CSK always go over and above for their players but somewhere in that kindness, maybe I am not saying the right thing, I absolutely love CSK, but when it comes to the country, there should be a line somewhere where we do not cross that line.”
Uthappa hails Rachin Ravindra's performance against India
The former Indian cricketer hailed the left-hander's impressive century on the challenging Bengaluru pitch, calling it one of the finest innings by an overseas player on Indian soil. He added that Ravindra’s 134 off 157 balls showcased his potential as a shining star for New Zealand's cricket future.
Uthappa signed off by saying, “On the basis of that preparation, Rachin Ravindra batter brilliantly. One of the best knocks by an overseas player. On that wicket, 134 off 157 balls, it was solid batting. He then showed that he is the future of New Zealand cricket.”
