Delhi Capitals (DC) will enter the IPL 2025 mega-auction without their longtime captain Rishabh Pant and after the end of his nine-year tenure with the franchise since 2016.
The Capitals have retained just four players: all-rounder Axar Patel (Rs 16.50 crore), spinner Kuldeep Yadav (Rs 13.25 crore), batsman Tristan Stubbs (Rs 10 crore), and wicketkeeper Abhishek Porel (Rs 4 crore).
73 Crores still left in DC Purse
This conservative retention strategy leaves them with a substantial purse of Rs 73 crore for the auction.
The departure of Pant who was Delhi Capital's first-choice retention in 2022 at Rs 16 crore, has left fans stunned.
The franchise had consistently backed him through previous mega-auctions in 2018 and 2022, making him the face of the team.
DC's massive overhaul comes after a disappointing 2024 season where they finished sixth and missed the playoffs.
The team has released 24 players, including international stars David Warner, Anrich Nortje, Mitchell Marsh, and Harry Brook.
Who Will Delhi Target in IPL 2025 Mega Auction?
The Delhi Capitals' current squad lacks pace bowlers after releasing their entire fast-bowling unit, including Nortje and Khaleel Ahmed.
While they have a strong spin foundation with Axar and Kuldeep, they'll need to invest heavily in fast bowlers and top-order batsmen.
The team is also without a captain, leading to speculation about potential targets like Shreyas Iyer, who previously led DC and recently won the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders.
Other rumored targets include power-hitters Jos Buttler and Phil Salt, along with all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis.
DC's previous rebuilds have shown mixed results. Their last major overhaul in 2022 led to consecutive playoff misses, a sharp decline from their 2020 finals appearance under Iyer's captaincy.
The IPL 2025 mega-auction, scheduled for November 24 will be crucial for Delhi Capitals as they attempt to construct a competitive squad.
