Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) headed into the 2025 mega auction in Jeddah with one of the smallest purses among franchises at INR 45 crore after having prioritized retaining their core Indian players.

Mumbai Indians made headlines by keeping star pacer Jasprit Bumrah for INR 18 crore, their highest retention.

They also secured the services of Suryakumar Yadav and new captain Hardik Pandya at INR 16.35 crore each, while former skipper Rohit Sharma stayed for INR 16.30 crore. Rising star Tilak Varma rounded out the retentions at INR 8 crore.

Notable releases included wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan, whose form had dipped in recent seasons. The team will need to fill 20 squad slots, including eight overseas positions, with their remaining budget.

Mumbai Indians face key challenges heading into the auction, particularly in strengthening its spin department and finding a reliable wicketkeeper.

Their most pressing needs include a frontline wicketkeeper to replace Kishan, an overseas fast bowler to partner with Bumrah, middle-order finishers, and experienced spin options.

MI's recent track record of developing young talent will tell they might target emerging players to complement their established stars.

Former MI players like Quinton de Kock and Trent Boult, who were part of their 2020 championship squad, could be potential targets given their proven success with the franchise. The auction, scheduled for November 24-25 marks MI's first major rebuild since 2022.

Under the Ambani-owned franchise's new leadership with Hardik Pandya, their auction strategy could shift in team composition while maintaining the aggressive playing style that has won them five IPL titles after being tied with Chennai Super Kings for the most in tournament history.
