The Indian Premier League auction takes place on an annual basis to auction the IPL cricket stars to different franchises in the league. It’s a multi-day event that will get underway on December 23rd.

The draft format is common for American sports – NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, and MLS. In major football leagues, a transfer system open beyond the league and country’s borders is employed. However, the auction system used in the IPL is unique. While it has been criticized in the past for demeaning the players – with talk of a draft being implemented to ensure a health distribution of emerging talent throughout the league – the auction remains, as does it’s two-day, frenetic bidding process and the spectacle – the very thing all sports want to enable regularly – continues to attract a global audience to see which great players end up on which teams.

Here, we will be taking a quick look at how the IPL auction might impact the IPL odds.

What is the IPL auction?

The IPL auction is a yearly multi-day event that sees major cricket stars in the Indian Premier League being auctioned to different franchises, and it’s overseen by a dedicated auctioneer. It’s simple, the club owners place bids to try and get their hands on a player, and the day is finished with squads being finalised for each club.

By the end of the auction, each team will have a maximum of 25 players and a minimum of 18 players in the squad. Each team has a budget and must spend a certain amount during the auction. They can bid on spin bowlers, fast bowlers, wicketkeepers, batters, and all-rounders. For some players, they get to carry on playing in the IPL, and for others, they get a shot at playing in the world’s most-watched cricket league for the very first time.

How will the auction impact IPL odds?

Depending on where the best and worst players end up can determine which odds will be offered for individual IPL matches. Don’t forget that you can also now find a growing number of IPL satta online betting sites that have one or two betting markets available for the IPL auction. One of the most popular bets is for the most expensive player at the auction. Let’s take a quick look at the average odds that you can get right now at several trusted Indian sports betting sites.

  • Ben Stokes is likely to be the most expensive player at auction, with odds of around 2.80 in European decimal odds, which is 1.8/1 in UK fraction odds, and 180 in American/moneyline odds with a 35.7% implied probability rate.
  • Sam Curran – is likely to be the second most expensive player at 3.90 (which is 2.9/1, or 290) with a 25.6% implied probability rate
  • Nicholas Pooran – 5.90 (which is 4.9/1, or 490) with a 16.9% implied probability rate
  • Cameroon Green – 6.60 (5.6/1, or 560) with a 15.2% implied probability rate

Other IPL auction most expensive player markets

You also have Manish Pandey and Kyle Jamieson, who are both currently around the joint-fifth odds-on favourites to be the most expensive player at the auction. They are priced at around 7.50 (6.5/1 or 650) with a 13.3% implied probability rate, and Mayank Agarwal is priced at around 9.50 (8.5/1, or 850) with a 10.5% implied probability rate.

When and where is the IPL Auction 2023?

The IPL Auction 2023 is expected to take place on Friday, December 16th, in Bengaluru. However, the exact start time has yet to be announced by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). You will likely be able to watch the live streaming of the auction as it unfolds from your smartphone via the Voot or Jio TV mobile applications.

If you’re watching from television, then you should also be able to watch across the major Star network television channels, such as Star Sports 1 Hindi, Star Sports 1, and Star Sports 1 HD. It also looks as though it will be conducted by the same British auctioneer that has overseen the last three Indian Premier league auctions – Hugh Edmeades. However, this has also yet to be confirmed.
