Australia’s Adelaide Oval is brewing an idea to host a regular-season IPL game as part of its next major move. As the people in Australia are known for their love for sports, an IPL match at the iconic venue can be a blockbuster.

It is reported that Adelaide Oval chairman Jamie Briggs and SACA boss Will Rayner have been in talks with the stakeholders to make the dream possible. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to be formally approached regarding this.

IPL matches in Australia would be a blockbuster

According to a report published by SEN, “But sources with knowledge of high-level discussions in Adelaide believe the ploy to bring an early season match to Australia could be used as part of a reciprocal arrangement with the BBL keen to play a match in Chennai.”

“An IPL match in Australia would sell out in minutes and bring tens of millions of eyeballs to the city, which has already used sport as a means for tourism via LIV Golf and the AFL’s Gather Round,” the report claimed.

Why have they selected March to host the matches?

But why in March? March has been marked as the best time to host a high-profile match because of the climatic reasons. During March, the weather in South Australia remains pleasant for arranging a cricket match. Additionally, in this time frame, there is a gap in the Australian cricket schedule, and it can attract a huge crowd as well.

The financial aspects are real behind the desire to host the Indian Premier League matches. According to the media report, the South Australian government believes that the matches of the cash-rich league could bring financial benefits to the locals, outweighing the food and drink purchased when they are staged.

The final decision is yet to be taken

Before formally approaching the BCCI, the high-profile stakeholders in Australia are expected to be engaged in multiple discussions. It is informed that South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, Don Farrell, Cricket Australia Chairman Mike Baird, Tourism South Australia, and Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg are involved in the development. It is also reported that during the Sheffield Shield Final, the head of Cricket Australia was informed about the ambitious project.

“When contacted by SEN, Briggs confirmed interest in bringing a regular-season IPL game to the City of Churches. This comes as Cricket Australia explores beginning the next BBL season in Chennai, as reported on SEN's The New Ball last month. BBL clubs have been sent expressions of interest for the concept, which is yet to be ticked off by the BCCI,” the news website informed before concluding the report.

So far, the Indian Premier League has been held abroad in only 4 seasons. During the 2009, 2014, 2020, and 2021 seasons, the franchise league shifted outside of India due to safety concerns, general elections, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournaments were moved to South Africa (2009) and the United Arab Emirates (2014, 2020, 2021) to ensure continuity amid these challenges.
