IPL: Winners Of Man Of The Tournament Award So Far

IPL 2021 is going to entertain Indian cricket fans from next month. IPL 2021 commences with the first match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 9, 2021. The match is scheduled to be played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. There are six venues that will host all the matches of IPL 2021. A total of 56 matches will be played among 8 teams in IPL 2021.

In every season, the man of the tournament award is conferred to a player. The award was known as ‘Man of the Tournament’ in the initial seasons of the Indian Premier League. Since IPL 2013, the award is titled ‘Most Valuable Player. However, the Most Valuable Player award is equivalent to Man of the tournament or Player of the tournament.

Over the years, many players have shown splendid performance to win the man of the tournament award in the Indian Premier League. Here we look at all the winners of the Man of the Tournament award in the Indian Premier League over the years.

IPL: Winners Of Man Of The Tournament Award So Far

IPL 2008 – Shane Watson

Shane Watson played for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2008 and he was awarded man of the tournament for his spectacular batting and bowling in the season. The Australian cricketer Shane Watson played 15 matches in IPL 2008 and scored 472 runs along with 4 half-centuries. In bowling, Watson scalped 17 wickets in 15 matches. He was conferred with the man of the tournament award for his amazing all-round performance.

IPL 2008 – Adam Gilchrist

Adam Gilchrist was the captain of Deccan Chargers in IPL 2009. The wicket-keeper batsman Gilchrist played 16 matches and scored 495 runs. He also smashed 3 fifties in the tournament. Under Adam Gilchrist’s leadership, Deccan Chargers won the IPL title in IPL 2009. Adam Gilchrist was also the 2nd highest run-scorer in the tournament.

IPL 2010 – Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar won the man of the tournament award in IPL 2010 for his fabulous batting. Sachin Tendulkar was the highest run-scorer in IPL 2010 and won the orange cap. Sachin Tendulkar played for Mumbai Indians in the tournament. In 15 matches in IPL 2010, Sachin Tendulkar smashed 618 runs. The master blaster also hit 5 half-centuries in the tournament.

IPL 2011- Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle was awarded man of the tournament in IPL 2011 for his spectacular batting. The West Indies cricketer Gayle was part of Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2011. He played 12 matches in the tournament and scored 608 runs. He also smashed 2 centuries and 3 half-centuries. Chris Gayle was also the highest run-scorer in IPL 2011 and won the orange cap.

IPL 2012- Sunil Narine

Sunil Narine was the winner of the man of the tournament award in IPL 2012. Sunil Narine played for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2012. It was Narine’s debut IPL season and he grabbed 24 wickets in 15 matches. He was also the 2nd highest wicket-taker in the tournament. In IPL 2012, Sunil Narine also recorded an incredible economy of 5.47.

Shane Watson won the player of the tournament award in IPL 2013 and it was the 2nd time Watson won this award in the Indian Premier League. The Australian all-rounder was part of Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2013. Waston played 16 matches in IPL 2013 and scored 543 runs which consisted of 1 century and 2 half-centuries. He also took 13 wickets in the tournament. Hence, Shane Watson showed a spectacular performance with both bat and the ball in IPL 2013 and won the man of the tournament award.

IPL 2014 – Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell won the man of the tournament award in IPL 2014 for his amazing batting show. Maxwell was part of Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings) in IPL 2014. The team lost the final match to Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2014. In 16 matches, Glenn Maxwell smashed 552 runs which included 4 half-centuries. Maxwell was also the 3rd highest run-scorer in the tournament.

IPL 2015 – Andre Russell

Andre Russell was awarded the man of the tournament award in IPL 2015 for his spectacular performance in batting and bowling. Andre Russell smashed 326 runs in 13 matches along with 3 fifties. The West Indies all-rounder Russell also scalped 14 wickets in 13 matches in IPL 2015. Russell was a worthy contender to win the man of the tournament award in IPL 2015.

IPL 2016 – Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli was awarded man of the tournament for his phenomenal batting in IPL 2016. While playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Virat Kohli smashed 973 runs in 16 matches and won the orange cap. This is the most runs smashed by a player in a single IPL tournament so far. Kohli also smashed 7 half-centuries and 4 centuries in IPL 2016 and impressed cricket fans with his performance.

IPL 2017 – Ben Stokes

All-rounder Ben Stokes won the man of the tournament award in IPL 2017. The English cricketer Stokes starred with both batting and bowling in his debut IPL season in IPL 2017. Ben Stokes played for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2017. Stokes smashed 316 runs in 12 matches which consisted of a century and a half-century. He also grabbed 12 wickets in the tournament.

IPL 2018 – Sunil Narine

Sunil Narine won the man of the tournament award for 2nd time in IPL 2018. However, this time, Sunil Narine won the award for both his bowling and batting performance. For Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunil Narine smashed 357 runs in 16 matches which included 2 half-centuries. He also grabbed 17 wickets for his team in the tournament.

IPL 2019- Andre Russell

Andre Russell won his 2nd man of the tournament award in IPL 2019. Andre Russell again won the award for his splendid all-round performance in IPL 2019. Andre Russell played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the tournament. He scored 510 runs in 14 games with 4 half-centuries. In bowling, he took 11 wickets in 14 matches.

IPL 2020 – Jofra Archer

Jofra Archer won the man of the tournament award in IPL 2020. The English pacer was part of the Rajasthan Royals in the tournament. Archer played 14 matches in IPL 2020 and bagged 20 wickets at an incredible economy of 6.55. Jofra Archer was the highest wicket-taker for Rajasthan Royals and he troubled the opposition batsmen with his pace attack.
