Pathan was once touted as the new avatar of Kapil Dev when he made his India debut in 2003. However, injuries and form led to his career fizzling out soon and he played his last international match for the Indian side in the year 2012.

However, he was once one of the brightest all-around talents in the world and under the coach Greg Chappell, regularly batted at no.3 in ODI cricket for India. He made 1105 runs in Test cricket at an average of 31.57. In ODI cricket, the left-hander amassed 1544 runs while in the T20I format of the game, Pathan plundered 172 runs.
He was also a part of the Indian side that won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in the year 2007. He remains the only bowler to take a hat-trick in the first over of a Test match, a feat he achieved against Pakistan in 2006.
Since his retirement, Pathan has exchanged the ball and bat with the mic in the commentary box and offers his expert opinions on the happenings of the game.
