Ishan Kishan makes a massive revelation ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, saying he always wished to open for India. The left-handed explosive batter was asked to open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma in the warm-up match against South Africa, where he played a blistering innings of 53 runs off just 20 balls.
India played their only warm-up game ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup against South Africa. The match followed an intense 5-match series against New Zealand, which marked the return of opener Ishan Kishan to the Indian team. However, initially, he was not handed an opening role to give Sanju Samson enough chances throughout the series.
However, playing all 5 games, Samson failed in all games and could amass just 52 runs at an average of 10.40. As the batter missed out on runs, Ishan Kishan was the most likely contender to replace him. Kishan, on his comeback series, had batted stunningly and was the second-highest scorer in the series, having scored a fifty and a hundred.
Ishan Kishan opens up on opening the innings for India
Ishan Kishan stole the show once again when he was handed an opportunity to open the innings against South Africa in a warm-up fixture. He scored 53 runs off just 20 balls in the match, and Kishan struck at 265 with two fours and seven sixes.
"I was really excited for Wednesday. I wanted to open the innings. Batting at number three, I enjoyed that situation, but with the World Cup coming up, no matter what position I bat in, my focus is always on doing my best for the team," Kishan said after speaking of the match.
"I think it’s about staying in the present, watching the ball and playing the shots that are required at that point in time. I’m not putting too much thought or effort into it. I’m just reacting, watching the ball, and playing accordingly, and that seems to be working well for me," Ishan Kishan reveals his batting strategy.
Ishan Kishan cites Tilak Varma's importance in the Indian T20I team
Ishan Kishan went on to praise the opportunity at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, and he claimed that some days do feel really good. He gave credit to the Navi Mumbai pitch for being such a reliable wicket to bat on.
He then went on to talk about intent and said that the mindset to get the ball past the boundary, even if there is a fielder placed in the deep, should be there. He then went on to mention the importance of batter Tilak Varma.
"He’s very important to us. He’s not just a batsman anymore; he gives us a few overs, especially when two left-handers are batting. He’s a very good fielder, and the way he’s batting these days, you need someone at number three who can rotate the strike and keep things moving," he said while talking about Tilak Varma.
Kishan praises stunning effort from Indian bowlers
Ishan Kishan pointed out that the pitch was a really good batting surface and hence, it was difficult for Indian bowlers to defend a total on that turf. However, Kishan praised the Indian bowlers for their stunning conduct in the warm-up game in Navi Mumbai.
"There’s always room for improvement. We’ll talk about areas we can bowl to batters and how we can plan better. But on this wicket, I think we did a pretty good job. It wasn’t easy, and we didn’t give away too many sixes. Overall, it was a solid bowling effort, though we’ll sit down and discuss how we can improve further," he further added.
India used every bowler in the deck, as even the likes of Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma bowled some overs between them. India used all their bowlers except for Jasprit Bumrah, who did not bowl a single ball in the warm-up game.
