Team India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan recently responded with humour to an old clip that included Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. In the viral clip, the 27-year-old cricketer joked that he did not get opportunities to play for two years, despite having scored a double century in ODIs just weeks earlier.

For the unversed, Kishan recorded the fastest ODI double hundred against Bangladesh in December 2022. The left-handed batter smashed 210 runs from 113 balls, including 24 fours and 10 sixes, but Shubman Gill was preferred as an opener in the following ODI series against Sri Lanka in January 2023.

“Aur konse do match? Do saal (Which two games, it’s two years,” Kishan said.

The original clip was earlier shared by the BCCI. While congratulating Gill, Rohit teased Kishan and said he missed three matches even after scoring a double century. Kishan replied in a light-hearted manner and told Rohit that selection decisions were in his hands.

"Ishan, yaar aapne 200 banake 3 match nahi khela. (Ishan, you didn't play for three matches despite scoring a 200)."

"Bhaiyya captain toh aap ho (Brother, you are the captain)," Kishan replied.

Ishan Kishan Made to Wait as Shubman Gill Opened in Sri Lanka Series

Ishan Kishan returned to the India setup in the ODI series against New Zealand, where he batted in the middle order. In that same match, Shubman Gill scored 208 runs from 149 balls against New Zealand.

Kishan continued to feature for India until the 2023 ODI World Cup. His final ODI appearance came against Afghanistan, where he made 47 runs.

Kishan later earned a recall to the T20I squad after finishing as the top run-scorer in the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He replaced Gill in the recently concluded five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

In his comeback series, Kishan scored 232 runs in four innings at an average of 53.75 and a strike rate of 231.18, including a century and a half-century. On the back of this form and Samson’s struggles, Kishan has emerged as India’s first-choice wicketkeeper ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Ishan Kishan In Contention To Open For India At T20 World Cup 2026

Ishan Kishan is in contention to open the batting for India during the T20 World Cup 2026. He recorded scores of 8, 76, and 28 before smashing a 43-ball 103 against New Zealand in the fifth and final T20I, which helped him secure a regular place in the playing XI.

Sanju Samson struggled in the same series, managing only 46 runs across five T20Is, which further boosted Kishan’s chances at the top of the order.

After the final T20I, captain Suryakumar Yadav said in a press conference that the decision on the second opener will be taken before India’s first World Cup match. India are also seen as a strong contender to win the title for a third time.

India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against the USA on February 7 in Mumbai. They are placed in Group A with the USA, Pakistan, Namibia, and the Netherlands. India will then face Namibia, Pakistan, and the Netherlands. However, Pakistan decided to boycott the match against India.
