The BCCI finally announced the list of centrally contracted players for the ongoing 2024-25 season on Monday (April 21). As soon as the contracts were announced, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan's names started doing the rounds on social media.
The reason was obvious. Both players had not only lost their central contracts last year, but the BCCI had also categorically stated that neither of the two was considered for contracts.
BCCI shows light
The decision from the board came after Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan refused to play domestic cricket.
They also lost their places in the Indian team, although Shreyas Iyer was recalled soon.
Recently, he was a part of the Indian team for their victorious Champions Trophy campaign. Iyer starred with the bat in the tournament, finishing it as India's highest run-scorer.
Ishan Kishan's contract situation:
With Iyer playing for India in recent times and doing well, not many were surprised to see him get a contract. However, Ishan Kishan's name in the central contracts list has taken many by surprise. The southpaw has not played for India since November 2023.
He has not featured in international cricket since the contract period began - 1 October 2024. Unsurprisingly, a lot of eyebrows were raised when Ishan Kishan got the contract from the BCCI. The decision also means that the wicketkeeper-batsman still features prominently in BCCI's plans, and it became very clear last year.
Kishan sidelined for a year
While Kishan lost his place in the Indian team, he was a part of the India A squad that toured Australia for two four-day matches ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year.
Before being sidelined, Kishan was a regular in all three formats for India. The BCCI appears to have taken his past performances into account when reinstating his contract.
Kishan, however, is unlikely to earn a recall from the senior Indian team anytime soon. He is currently playing in IPL 2025 and is struggling with his form. He started his campaign with a century against the Rajasthan Royals but has struggled since then.
