West Indies legend Sir Viv Richards has backed Indian batting stalwart Virat Kohli to stage a fighting comeback in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Sir Viv Richards' comments came 2 days before Virat Kohli and the Indian team took on bitter-rivals Australia in their final Super 8 match. Both of the teams have the opportunity to qualify for the semi-finals with a win tonight whereas a lot also depends on how the Afghanistan-Bangladesh match finishes tomorrow.
But the match that we all are waiting to see tonight is going to be nothing less than mouth-watering. All the eyes will be on none other than former India captain Virat Kohli, who appears to be arriving back in form against Bangladesh. Before the Super 8s, Kohli had only scored 5 runs from 3 Group matches combined.
In the first two Super 8 matches against Afghanistan and Bangladesh, Virat Kohli might have been reduced to scores of 24 and 37 but he still has time. Tonight's clash against Australia is a perfect platform for the right-hand batter to showcase his skills and come out from the minor slump in his form.
There were a lot of expectations from him, especially after his 700+ run-scoring Indian Premier League season but the adverse conditions have affected him. It will be interesting to see how Virat Kohli stages a comeback in the later half of the tournament and in the final game before India possibly plays England in the semi-finals for the second edition in a row.
Ahead of the all-important match against Mitchell Marsh's Australian team, Sir Vivian Richards made a bold statement on Virat Kohli.
Sir Viv Richards speaks about India's performance and claims Virat Kohli is a fighter
While speaking to RevSportz exclusively, Sir Viv Richards spoke about the Indian team's performance in the World Cup. He mainly spoke about how important is it for teams to not peak at the start of a tournament and how it negatively affects a team's performance in the later stages.
This is something that Indian fans will know very well. Last year, Rohit Sharma and co. won all their league matches in the run-in to the final but they eventually lost to Australia in the final. Therefore, Sir Viv Richards believes that early failures actually help a team going forward.
The 2-time World Cup winner also shed light on the importance of teams getting their act together during the knockout rounds. As for Virat Kohli, Richards claimed that he is backing him to come back from the slump.
"Well I have always believed especially in such long tournaments, when you peak too early, sometimes it is not too good. It is nice to have a few failures early and these are the championship rounds now, when you get into the Super 8, semis and this is where you need to get your act together. I would back Virat Kohli anyway to come good as he is a fighter and I have no doubts." - Sir Viv Richards told RevSportz.
