Cricket has always been a game of wonders, and Italy has dominated the Men's T20 World Cup Europe Region final match with a historic 12-run victory. The Italian underdogs have surprised some internationally featured sides to emerge at the top of the points table.

Italy are placed alongside Jersey and Scotland in the group and currently top the group, winning two games and one game ending without any result. Italy now has 5 points, with the other two teams having three points each.

After sitting at the top, Italy will now go on to face the Netherlands in their final match, and a win would secure them a direct entry into the Men's T20 World Cup for the first time in the history of the game.

However, a loss would still affect their chances, which would leave them carrying over the net run rate.

Italy vs Scotland: A brief Highlight

Winning the toss, Italian skipper Emilio Gay top-scored for them with a blistering knock of 50, which included 6 fours and two sixes, off just 21 balls.

The middle order played an even bigger role when they put on a valuable 46-run stand, which helped Italy secure a competitive total of 167/6 in their 20 overs. Harry Manenti contributed significantly with the bat with a run-a-ball 38, and Grant Stewart, the other batter, smashed the ball for his 44.

In response to the set target, the Scottish batters George Munsey and Richie Berrington had put together a mammoth partnership of 105 runs, as the pair batted for 12.3 overs. Munsey scored a decent 72 runs, while Berrington, too, played a nice hand with 46 runs before getting out.

However, they all succumbed to the brilliant spell from Marenti, who also claimed a five-wicket haul and finished with the figures of 5/31.

India and Sri Lanka to co-host ICC T20 World Cup 2026

India will be hosting the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 alongside the neighbouring nation, Sri Lanka. The two neighbours will be hosting another World Cup for the first time since 2011, as the 2023 ICC World Cup was hosted alone by the Indian side.

The ICC T20 World Cup will be held in the February to March window, which will include a total of 20 teams. This includes the host side; Sri Lanka missed out on the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. It will also include the other nations and the qualifiers from the American, European, African, and Asian-EAP qualification games.

India enters the 2026 World Cup as defending champions

India will enter the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup as the defending champions, since they won it for the second time in the ICC T20 World Cup of 2024. The greats from the Indian side retired after the marquee tournament.

India would still have the services of Hardik Pandya, new skipper Suryakumar Yadav, and probably the legendary Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Several newer talents would also feature in the upcoming edition in the quest to defend their title, which the veterans had left for them.
