Former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif made a surprising revelation about the pitch used in the World Cup 2023 final between India and Australia. Mohammad Kaif blamed skipper Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid for the loss in the summit clash in Ahmedabad.

India maintained an unbeaten streak throughout the tournament, winning ten consecutive matches before the final encounter. However, their momentum faltered in the crucial final against Australia, resulting in disappointment for both fans and players.

Many experts criticized the pitches used in the 2023 World Cup, accusing India of doctoring the pitches. There was considerable discussion surrounding the pitch quality during the final match, with many attributing India’s defeat to the sluggish nature of the surface.

Saw The Colour Of That Pitch Change – Mohammad Kaif

In a recent interview with The Lallantop, Mohammad Kaif, who was part of the broadcasting team during the tournament, shared intriguing insights into the alleged involvement of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid in preparing the pitch for the final match.

Kaif revealed that he witnessed Rohit and Dravid visiting the pitch over three days, observing significant changes in its appearance, suggesting potential tampering.

“I was there for three days, did a lot of shows. Rohit Sharma came in the evening with Dravid, went to the pitch, stood there for an hour and went back. They came again on the second day, and did the same thing. This went on for three days, and I saw the colour of that pitch change. I wore a blue shirt today, it would look yellow three days later… that was the extent of that change,” Kaif said.

In the highly anticipated game, Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to field first. The visitors restricted India to 240 runs despite their promising start. Travis Head’s exceptional century guided their chase, securing their sixth World Cup title.

It Became A Very Slow Pitch – Mohammad Kaif

Mohammad Kaif stated that the decision to prepare the slow pitch was made due to the presence of fast bowlers like Cummins and Starc in the Australian team. He noted that this decision ultimately backfired for India, contributing to their defeat in the match.

“No watering, no grass. It became a very slow pitch. This is the truth. There were Cummins and Starc, they bowled quick, and the thought was to give them a slow pitch, and they did make a mistake there. People say ‘curator did his job, we didn’t say anything’. Sab bakvaas hai (It’s all rubbish). You were roaming there, you are talking to him 100. ‘Ghaas kam karo, paani kam daalna,” do line hi toh bolni hain (Don’t use too much grass, don’t water it. You just have to say two lines). And there’s nothing wrong in that, you are the home team, take advantage. But we didn’t use it properly,” Kaif added.

Rohit Sharma and the Indian team displayed outstanding performances throughout the tournament on home soil. Ace batter Virat Kohli earned the ‘Player of the Series’ title for being the leading run scorer in the prestigious tournament.

India’s upcoming goal is to secure victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the West Indies and the USA in June. Notably, the Indian team has not claimed the T20 World Cup title since their inaugural win in 2007.
