England’s frontline pacer James Anderson might be advised to rest for the fourth Test between England and India to be held at The Oval from September 2. The 39-year-old’s workload management has always been one of England’s top priorities so he may miss out on the Oval Test.

Anderson has already bowled over 100 overs in the first three Test matches, second only to Ollie Robinson who has bowled 116.5 overs which is the most by a bowler in the series.

Another factor that might play a big part is the number of rest days in between Tests for the last three games. The matches are stacked – the third was scheduled from August 25-29, the fourth from September 2-6, and the final Test at Old Trafford from September 10-14.

What I don’t want to do is break them. We’ve got a lot of cricket in front of us. The Tests are coming thick and fast now. Back-to-back, it is difficult,” head coach Chris Silverwood had stated while announcing the squad for the fourth Test.

The upcoming two Test matches could be James Anderson’s last against India

This may well be Anderson’s last outing against Team India, and he would want to play every Test match possible. Also, keep in mind his rivalry with Team India skipper Virat Kohli, there are a lot of things at stake for one of the greatest Test bowlers ever.

Although, a major point of concern for England is that plenty of first-choice bowlers have already sustained injuries. Therefore, keeping Anderson fit and healthy would be the hosts’ top priority.

These guys are giving everything, every day when we are out on the field and we have got to make sure we are looking after them. But I won’t be making any decisions or judgments right now,” Silverwood mentioned.

The team also has the Ashes series later on this year, which could play a role in deciding if he plays. For now, being the competitive player Anderson is, it would be hard to convince him to sit out a match, as per Silverwood.

It will be interesting to see the team composition England goes in with after the Headingley victory.
