According to the latest report, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may ask the red-ball head coach, Jason Gillespie, to take over the all-format coaching role.

The Pakistan Cricket Board, however, will only appoint Jason Gillespie as the all-format head coach if Mohammad Rizwan & Co. perform well in the series Down Under.

Gary Kirsten shocked PCB with sudden resignation

The white-ball head coach of the Pakistan National Cricket Team, Gary Kirsten shocked PCB as he suddenly resigned just six months after taking up the job. Notably, he joined the Pakistan National Cricket Team in April 2024 after signing a two-year deal.

His resignation forced PCB to look for new coaches, and for the time being, the red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie was asked to fill in the head coach duties on the tour of Australia.

Kirsten's sudden exit came due to the rift between the coach and the PCB. Kirsten, along with Jason Gillespie, were removed from the Pakistan selection committee, and their powers were reduced with the addition of new members to the selection panel. Those members were Aaqib Javed, Azhar Ali, and Aleem Dar.

Reportedly, Gary Kirsten's inputs were not taken into consideration while picking up the squads for the Australia tour, and he felt sidelined. Under, Kirsten, Pakistan had a terrible outing in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as they lost to USA and India to face an early exit from the marquee competition.

For the moment, the Board is working on a plan to appoint Jason Gillespie as all-format head coach - Source

A Pakistan Cricket Board source while speaking to PTI, revealed that the board is currently looking to give the all-format coaching duties to Gillespie if Pakistan deliver a "satisfactory" performance in the ongoing white-ball series in Australia.

"For the moment, the Board is working on a plan to appoint Jason Gillespie as all-format head coach instead of advertising for new candidates," a PCB source told PTI on Thursday.

"If Pakistan performs satisfactorily in the remaining games in Australia, then in all probability, Gillispie would be asked to take over as all formats head coach," the source added.

PCB's preference is to have Gillespie to also be white-ball head coach if he agrees - Source

The Pakistan Cricket Board is confident that Jason Gillespie will accept the all-format head coach role and the extra responsibility if everything goes as planned. Other than Gillespie, PCB has shortlisted three former Pakistan players, including Saqlain Mushtaq, for the job.

"Immediately afterwards, the team has to fly to Zimbabwe for another white-ball series. So, any final call would be made before that," the source added.

"But, the PCB's preference is to have Gillespie to also be white-ball head coach if he agrees," he said.

Notably, Pakistan lost the first ODI by two wickets to Australia. The match was a really close one but in the end, the Aussies clinched the win.
