Team India pacer Jasprit Bumrah has taken a brutal dig at his critics following his five-wicket haul in the first Test of the five-match series against England at Headingley. Bumrah said that he doesn't concern himself with opinions or headlines and wants to stay focused on his own methods and mindset.
Jasprit Bumrah has been under scrutiny over the years considering his injury record. The fast bowler sustained a back injury during the Australia tour, which forced him to miss the Champions Trophy 2025. Notably, the Indian team management confirmed that Bumrah might play just three of the five Tests.
Jasprit Bumrah Etches His Name in the Record Books in 1st Test vs England
The right-arm speedster took five wickets in England's first innings, finishing with figures of 5 for 83 in 24.4 overs. He dismissed three batters on Day 2 and wrapped up his spell on Day 3 by removing Josh Tongue.
There were also three dropped catches off his bowling (two by Yashasvi Jaiswal and one by Ravindra Jadeja), along with a costly no-ball that overturned the dismissal of Harry Brook, who went on to score 99. Bumrah helped India take a six-run first-innings lead.
The 31-year-old also etched his name in the record books. He equaled Kapil Dev’s tally of 12 five-wicket hauls in overseas Tests and became the first Asian bowler to reach 150 Test wickets in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia).
It was his third five-for in England and fourth overall against them. At the end of Day 3, the match is evenly poised, with India at 90/2 in their second innings.

I Can’t Control What People Write - Jasprit Bumrah
Speaking at the press conference, Jasprit Bumrah opened up about the various headlines regarding his injuries. Bumrah stated that he doesn’t let outside noise influence his mindset.
"I can't control what people write. Nor am I trying to teach people what to write and what not to write about me. Everybody is free to write what they want," said Bumrah.
"I understand cricket is very popular in our country, and I understand that using my name in the headline boosts the viewership. But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter to me. Because if I let it get into my head, I will start believing it. I need my beliefs and my ways to dictate how I go. Not the way others want me to play," he added.
They Said I Wouldn’t Be Able to Play - Jasprit Bumrah
The Indian pacer revealed that many doubted his longevity, predicting he wouldn’t last more than six to eight months in international cricket. Jasprit Bumrah said that his success has come from staying true to his own preparation methods rather than trying to meet others’ expectations.
"What matters to me is who I am and what I believe in - that should dictate how I go about things. If someone else wants me to play in a certain way, I’m not that kind of person. My preparation, my ideas - they’ve always been rooted in my desire to play for India."
"I’ve played cricket based on my own beliefs. I’ve reached every format on the back of those beliefs. Because people didn’t just say no to me once - at first, they said I wouldn’t be able to play, then they said I’d last only six months, then eight months. But playing and playing, I’m now close to completing ten years in international cricket. It’s been twelve or thirteen years that I’ve played in the IPL."
