Mumbai Indians (MI) coach Mahela Jayawardene has shared a positive update on star pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s recovery ahead of their IPL 2025 game against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Saturday, March 29, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Jayawardene said that Jasprit Bumrah is progressing well with his rehabilitation after suffering a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia. The MI head coach revealed that Bumrah is following his recovery program diligently, and everything appears to be going well.

However, Jayawardene said that there is still no official timeline from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) regarding Bumrah’s return to the ongoing IPL 2025. It is a big blow to the five-time IPL champions as they are aiming to return to winning ways after losing the season opener to Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Mahela Jayawardene said at the pre-match press conference, “Everyone is available except for Bumrah. Like I said in my last interview as well, it’s on a daily basis that he’s going through his program. So far, everything seems okay. But there were no timelines given by NCA, so we’ll wait on that.”

Jayawardene emphasized that MI’s experienced bowling attack featuring the likes of Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Mitchel Santner is adaptable, so they are focusing on tailoring strategies based on venues and oppositions to tackle challenges effectively in the ongoing IPL 2025.

We'll make plans based on the opposition and venue: Jayawardene

The coach added, “We’ve got a very experienced bowling attack. I think we have to segregate the venues. I think we’ve got enough experience to understand how it works. Like I said, each venue and each opposition throw us different challenges, and that’s something that we will focus on.

So as long as we understand that, then that is how we plan and structure things. And once we get to that venue, once we see that opposition, that’s when our plans come into play.”

Well, Hardik Pandya will return to lead the Mumbai Indians in their second IPL 2025 game against the Gujarat Titans on Saturday after missing CSK’s defeat due to last season’s slow-over rate penalty.

Jasprit Bumrah out of action since Australia tour

Notably, Bumrah was last seen in action during the fifth and final Test against Australia at the SCG, where he could bowl only a few overs as India lost the game and Test series as well.

He was expected to return to action during the ODI series against England at home, but the medical team didn’t give the green signal, and he was eventually ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

However, there were some hopes of Bumrah’s return for the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI), but he missed their IPL 2025 opener against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and now he is likely to miss more matches for the team in the tournament.
