Pace bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of India's upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. According to reports, there is a major communication gap between the BCCI Centre of Excellence sports science team and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee over the fast bowler's fitness.

The selectors were initially told that Jasprit Bumrah would be available for the Sri Lanka Test series, which is scheduled to begin at Galle on August 15. However, fresh medical assessments later confirmed that his knee injury was more serious than previously reported by the Centre of Excellence medical staff.

Jasprit Bumrah Injury Raises Questions Over Centre of Excellence

The BCCI Centre of Excellence has been without a full-time head of sports science since Nitin Patel's departure. Interim head Dhananjay Kaushik currently oversees the department, but recent injury cases have raised questions about rehabilitation timelines and whether return-to-play protocols are being followed.

According to reports, the selectors have sought answers after several fitness concerns involving centrally contracted players. Harshit Rana was cleared despite concerns over his fitness before suffering another hamstring injury.

Washington Sundar's repeated injury setbacks and Nitish Kumar Reddy's training program under fast-bowling coach Stefan Jones have also come under scrutiny.

The role of Team India physio Kamlesh Jain is also expected to be reviewed following a series of injury setbacks. A BCCI review meeting involving head coach Gautam Gambhir, selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar, VVS Laxman, and secretary Devajit Saikia is expected to take place

Selectors Concerned Over Sai Sudharsan's Fitness After Jasprit Bumrah Ruled Out

The current sports science team is doing enough to help injured players return on time. According to PTI, there is uncertainty surrounding Sai Sudharsan's fitness. The selectors have been told Sai Sudharsan is making good progress, but they remain cautious after the Jasprit Bumrah situation.

"The safest thing is to rule a player out, but is the current sports science staff at the CoE doing enough to get top players back on the park on time? Selectors were assured that Bumrah would be available for at least one Test," a BCCI official tracking developments at the CoE told PTI on condition of anonymity.

"Now they have been informed that Sai Sudharsan is batting in the nets for 75 minutes and is showing signs of a good recovery after suffering a foot injury. But what if selectors are later told that Sai won't be fit in time for the first Test against Sri Lanka?"

Jasprit Bumrah Blow Hurts India's WTC Campaign

Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the Sri Lanka Test series after continued discomfort in his knee during assessments at the Centre of Excellence. He also missed the final ODI against England after failing a fitness test because of a knee issue, and India went on to lose the series 2-1.

Injuries have limited Bumrah's appearances over the past two years. He missed India's one-off Test against Afghanistan and also sat out two matches during the England Test series. The 32-year-old has taken 234 wickets in 52 Tests at an outstanding average of 19.79, including 16 five-wicket hauls.

India will begin the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in Galle on August 15 before the second Test starts in Colombo on August 23. Currently fifth in the 2025-27 World Test Championship standings, India need a strong result in Sri Lanka to keep their hopes of reaching the WTC final at The Oval alive.
