Jaspreet Bumrah has been ruled out of the entire India versus Sri Lanka Test series. The star fast bowler of the Indian National Cricket Team was originally named for the series to face the Sri Lankan National Cricket Team for the 2-match contest, while his participation remained uncertain due to injury setbacks.
As per the latest developments, Jasprit Bumrah is no longer in the plans for the Test series as he is yet to fully recover from the injury. On Sunday, August 2, Times of India reported that Bumrah has some discomfort in his left knee.
The issue in his left knee ruled out Jasprit Bumrah from the India vs Sri Lanka Test series.
Because of the discomfort, he will not be able to take part in the India vs Sri Lanka away series. After assessing the current fitness conditions of the fast bowler, the board has decided to pull him out of the series.
The left injury of Jasprit Bumrah emerged as a subject of concern at the business end of the 2026 T20 World Cup. At the initial stage, it was anticipated that the pacer would be fit to play the Tests against Sri Lanka.
He injured his left knee again while fielding against England in an ODI match in Cardiff, which forced him to miss the decider match of the series. Jasprit Bumrah remained in Bengaluru at BCCI's Center of Excellence during the T20I series against Zimbabwe as well.
A fully fit Jasprit Bumrah is now the primary preference for the BCCI
A source close to the development informed the media house that the BCCI will take no risk as they want to protect a talent like Bumrah. As of now, the fast bowler's complete recovery is the first preference for the BCCI ahead of the next ODI World Cup, which will be in 2027.
"There have been instances in the past where players have been rushed back to cricket and have broken down. You can't take that risk again. Especially with Bumrah. So complete recovery is the only goal, and there is a lot of cricket left in the year. There is the Asian Games, the tour of New Zealand, and even the Border-Gavaskar Trophy early next year," the source told TOI.
Who will be Jasprit Bumrah's replacement?
A couple of days ago, it was widely reported that Bumrah would be fit to play the Test series in Sri Lanka. Today, the latest reports informed that he is yet to clear his fitness; thus, the pacer will not play the India vs Sri Lanka Test series.
If the latest report turns out to be true, then the board will have to announce a replacement soon. Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Auqib Nabi Dar, who was the top wicket-taker in the previous season of the Ranji Trophy, could be an instant option as Bumrah's replacement. There are a few other pacers like Anshul Kamboj, Arshdeep Singh, and Yash Thakur, who could be in contention to replace the pace spearhead.
