India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has once again expressed his desire to become the captain of Team India. At present, Rohit Sharma is leading the team in all three formats. Last year, Hardik Pandya as well as Suryakumar Yadav led the T20I team but Rohit was recently recalled and was given the charge of the team once again.

As far as Jasprit Bumrah is concerned, he is one of the leaders of the team and has already led Team India in one Test. He was the captain when India visited England for the rescheduled fifth Test in 2022. Rohit was out after testing positive for Covid while vice-captain KL Rahul was sidelined with an injury.

It was a historic event as Jasprit Bumrah became the first fast bowler in 35 years to lead the Indian team. As of now, he is the vice-captain of the Test team and fancies his chance of leading the team in the future. With Rohit nearing 37, Jasprit Bumrah knows that India will need a new captain soon and has thrown his hat in the ring.

“I did one game and it was the utmost honor. Playing Test cricket is great, captaining was even better. Yes, we lost but we were ahead in the match and I loved the responsibility. Sometimes as a fast bowler, you go down to fine leg and switch off but I loved being involved in every decision, right in the thick of things. And given the opportunity, of course, who wouldn’t?” Jasprit Bumrah told The Guardian in an interview.

Jasprit Bumrah takes inspiration from Pat Cummins:

Fast bowlers are rarely appointed as captains. However, Jasprit Bumrah believes the pacers can be good leaders and cited the example of Pat Cummins who led Australia to World Cup and World Test Championship triumphs last year.

“Cummins plays for Australia, but the number of matches differs and that kind of thing. Not many seamers have done it before. But it’s a good example that yes, fast bowlers are the smart ones, they do a hard job and they know what to do around the game,” Jasprit Bumrah said.

The India star is currently preparing for the upcoming five-match Test series against England at home. The series is scheduled to get underway on Thursday (January 25) in Hyderabad.
