Jasprit Bumrah was overlooked by the selectors for any leadership role in the Indian Test team. Bumrah was the vice-captain when Rohit Sharma was leading the team.

Bumrah also had experience in leading the Indian team in overseas Test matches, but the selectors appointed Shubman Gill as the new skipper for the red-ball format. Whereas Rishabh Pant will be Gill’s deputy in Test cricket.

Why was Jasprit Bumrah overlooked by selectors?

Bumrah’s workload management might be the reason why selectors ruled him out of any leadership role. Bumrah was also injured in the last overseas Test match against Australia and didn’t bowl in the last innings of the match.

The selection committee is also looking to rebuild the team for the next decade after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's retirement.

“I mean, not really booms (Bumrah), because he led in Australia. He was vice captain in Australia but once he's not going to be available for all the test matches, I think he's more important to us as a player. We want him fit. There's always that extra burden when you're leading, managing 15-16, other people, there's a lot that it takes out of you.” Ajit Agarkar said at the press conference.

Agarkar also added that the management wants Bumrah to bowl at his best, and they didn’t put any extra burden on him by giving him captaincy.

Here’s a look at the fans' reaction on Twitter:

Jasprit Bumrah’s availability

Ajit Agarkar confirmed that Bumrah won’t be available for all five Test matches in the England tour. Agarkar also clarified that selectors didn’t pick the team for1-2 tours, they select the squad for investing in young lads.

"You don't pick captains for 1-2 tours, you want to invest in something going forward. We've seen some progress with Gill over the last year. It is going to be tough, but maybe he will have to learn on the job a bit. We are happy with what he has to offer and that is why we have picked him," Agarkar said.

Bumrah’s Test career has not been smooth since he suffered a back injury for the first time. Bumrah didn’t play all matches in a single Test series a couple of times.

Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack

Despite not being given the leadership role, Bumrah will lead the Indian pace attack on the England tour. Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, Shardul Thakur, Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj will be under Bumrah’s umbrella in the England tour.
