Team India pace-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah provided a breakthrough for his team on Day 1 (Saturday, November 22) of the second Test against South Africa at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Bumrah ended the partnership between Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton just before the break.

The right-arm pacer troubled South Africa with his tight bowling during the first spell. Bumrah induced an edge from Markram’s bat, but KL Rahul dropped a straightforward catch. However, he ended the session by dismissing the right-handed batter in the final over of the first session on the opening day.

Markram attempted an ambitious drive at a fuller delivery outside off, but with limited footwork, he got a thick inside edge that crashed into the middle stump. The dismissal triggered loud celebrations among the Indian supporters, while KL Rahul, who had dropped Markram on 4, looked visibly relieved.

Bumrah’s ability to change the game in a single over justified Rishabh Pant’s decision to recall him moments before the break. The wicket gave India much-needed relief in the must-win encounter to keep the Test series alive.

Aiden Markram Dropped on 4 by KL Rahul Off Jasprit Bumrah

Temba Bavuma’s decision to bat first paid dividends early. Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton handled the initial burst from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj without panic. India’s fast bowlers were denied any early success with the new ball.

India had a chance to break through when Bumrah found an edge off Markram, but KL Rahul spilled the catch in the slips. The Proteas batters adjusted well to the conditions and India’s attack, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries.

Rishabh Pant made one last attempt to break the stand before Tea, bringing Jasprit Bumrah back for a short burst. Bumrah bowled Markram for 38 on the fifth ball of the 27th over. South Africa reached the interval at 82 for 1, still well-placed despite the late wicket.

India Without Shubman Gill for the Second Test Against South Africa

India are without Shubman Gill for the crucial second Test against South Africa after he failed to recover from the neck spasm he suffered during the opening match. Rishabh Pant is leading the national cricket team in Guwahati.

Gill picked up the injury early in the first Test at Eden Gardens. The batter walked off after facing just three balls. He was taken to a Kolkata hospital for treatment and did not return to bat in the second innings. India collapsed while chasing a modest 124 and suffered a 30-run defeat.

Gill was discharged soon after the match and travelled with the squad to Guwahati. However, the BCCI confirmed he would undergo further medical evaluation in Mumbai. There is also uncertainty over his participation in the upcoming ODI series against the same opponent.
