Jasprit Bumrah was one of the top contenders for the role because he served as the deputy of Rohit Sharma in red-ball cricket. However, he has pulled out of the race as he is not interested in captaining the team.
According to a report in Sky Sports News, Bumrah denied the Test captaincy, and he doesn't want to commit to playing all five Tests in the series against England due to his injury issues and workload.
"Jasprit Bumrah has opted out of being India's next Test captain, with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant now the frontrunners, Sky Sports News understands," read the report.
Bumrah led India in two matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, winning in Perth and losing in Sydney. Before that, he had led India in one Test match against England in 2022, which India lost.

Under Rohit Sharma, the Indian tri-colour flew proudly - Sunil Gavaskar
Recently, Sunil Gavaskar showered rich praise on Rohit Sharma following his Test retirement. The batting legend highlighted the impact of his 'Bambaiya Hindi' on youngsters and said that the Indian tri-colour flew proudly under his leadership. In his column for Mid-day, Sunil Gavaskar wrote:
"As a captain, his laid-back manner hid a steely resolve to win. His Bambaiya Hindi also conveyed a stern message to the younger members of the team in a humorous way. Not only the cricket-loving public but even the media will miss the interactions they used to have with him at the end of the day’s play."
"Under Rohit Sharma, the Indian tri-colour flew proudly at bilateral series and the world events, with India being in the final three times and winning twice. So, a huge round of applause and a standing ovation to him as he bids Test cricket goodbye."
