Former India pacer Irfan Pathan has questioned Indian management's sense in limiting Jasprit Bumrah's use during major series in the name of workload management and has drawn comparisons with Australian skipper Pat Cummins to prove his claim.
Since the India vs England Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, several players have scrutinized the decision over resting Jasprit Bumrah in the two Tests at Edgbaston and The Oval, and many have even criticized the Indian management after finding this controversial.
Jasprit Bumrah, citing his workload concerns, was reported to be featuring in only 3 matches in England, and despite the series being in a very sensitive spot until the Oval win, he played only in 3 games, missing two of the most crucial games for India. India, however, went on to defend their title with a 2-2 draw in the series.
Irfan Pathan supports the Indian management's call for managing the workload of top-priority players
Former Indian pacer Irfan Pathan, since Day 1, has voiced his opinion on the suddenly rising trend of workload management for certain Indian players, especially the pace bowlers.
“About the workload, there has been a lot of talk about it. I feel that there are some important players, Jasprit Bumrah or any other fast bowler; you manage everybody’s workload,” said Irfan while speaking to reporters in a discussion organised by Sony Sports Network.
“You should as well, and the setup has been outstanding from BCCI and NCA. The workload is managed really well,” he added.
Pathan tears through Jasprit Bumrah and India management, saying, 'Would Cummins manage workload during the Ashes?'
Irfan next went on to compare Jasprit Bumrah with the Australian skipper and fast bowler Pat Cummins and questioned whether Cummins might be managing his workload until the Ashes, but will he continue to manage it during the Ashes itself?
“I just have one thing to say, you would have heard recently that Pat Cummins will skip many games to manage his workload for the Ashes. But will Cummins manage his workload during the Ashes?" he questioned.
"My question is only that. By all means, manage workload, yes. SENA countries are tough places to go and win. There, your main bowlers must play as many games as they can. During the series, a top series, you will not get the result if you look to manage workload there,” he added.
Pat Cummins to miss white-ball series against India
As per Cricket Australia claims, their skipper Pat Cummins, who has not featured since the West Indies red-ball tour, has suffered an injury and will also miss the white-ball series against New Zealand and the one that follows against India.
Australia's next red-ball series is the Ashes against England, where they begin their title defence on their own soil in November 2025. However, alongside Mitchell Starc, who recently announced his retirement from T20Is, Cummins would also miss the New Zealand T20Is for Australia in October and is likely to be ruled out of the Indian white-ball series as well.
