Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is reportedly set to become the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman.

Jay Shah is likely to take over the charge of the ICC after Greg Barclay's resignation amid a dispute between the governing body and its major broadcast rights holder, Star.

The ICC faces a $US3 billion ($4.46 billion) dispute with Star. The broadcaster wants to renegotiate its 2022 deal for broadcasting rights in India from 2024 to 2027.

Star is seeking relief from the deal’s value, wanting to reduce it by up to half. This move could result in financial losses for major cricketing nations.

Star planned to share the deal with ZeeTV, which was merging with Sony. However, with the ZeeTV-Sony merger failing, ZeeTV withdrew from sub-licensing the rights.

Star’s dissatisfaction with the cost was also shown by its unsuccessful bid to relocate the World Cup from the USA and the Caribbean to India.

Greg Barclay Resigns From ICC Chairman Post, ICC Confirms

According to the latest news reports, Greg Barclay has decided not to extend his second term, which will end on November 30.

Barclay informed ICC directors, including Cricket Australia's chair Mike Baird, of his decision during a video call. This news comes after Jay Shah expressed his wish to replace Barclay.

The ICC announced that Greg Barclay will not seek a third term as chairman and will step down at the end of his current tenure in November.

Barclay was first appointed in November 2020 and re-elected in 2022. The statement revealed that Barclay confirmed his decision to the Board.

"ICC Chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the Board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022."

Jay Shah Set To Become ICC Chairman?

According to the rules, an ICC chairman can serve up to three terms of two years each. Greg Barclay has completed four years as the incumbent chairman.

A candidate must secure 51% of the votes to be elected chairman. The candidate should get nine out of 16 members votes to become the ICC chairman.

Shah has one year remaining as BCCI secretary before entering a mandatory three-year cooling-off period starting October 2025.

According to the BCCI constitution, office bearers can serve a maximum of six consecutive years before a cooling-off period. He has support from the 16 ICC voting members.

Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, Shashank Manohar, and N Srinivasanare are the only Indians who have previously served as ICC chairman. If Jay Shah assumes the role, he will become the youngest ICC chairman at 35.
