Former international cricketers Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan shared their thoughts on England batter Joe Root breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record for most Test runs.

Michael Vaughan backed Joe Root to become the leading run-scorer in the history of Test cricket in the coming years.

Joe Root is currently seventh in the list of leading run-scorers in Test cricket. The right-handed batter has scored 12,377 runs in 145 Tests at an average of 50.93, including 34 centuries and 64 half-centuries. He is the leading run-scorer among active cricketers in the longer international format.

Sachin Tendulkar scored 15,921 runs in 200 Tests. Ricky Ponting is second with 13,378 runs, followed by Jacques Kallis (13,289), Rahul Dravid (13,288), Alastair Cook (12,472), and Kumar Sangakkara (12,400). Joe Root is being touted by experts as the most likely player to break Tendulkar's record.

Have Got No Idea What Joe Root's Appetite's Like - Adam Gilchrist

Speaking on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Adam Gilchrist said that he is uncertain about Joe Root breaking Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing Test record. Gilchrist mentioned that Root is likely to move away from white-ball cricket soon.

"He's a youngster, isn't he? I've got no idea what his appetite's like. I mean, he's clearly pretty hungry at the moment, but if he has a desire to keep going. He's going to phase out of white ball completely, isn't he? He has already pretty much," Gilchrist said.

Root scored 7,823 runs at an average of 47.99, with 17 centuries from his debut in December 2012 until the end of 2020. He has improved his performance since the beginning of 2021, amassing 4,554 runs in 48 Test matches at an average of 56.92, including 17 centuries and a highest score of 228.

I'd Be Amazed If He Doesn't - Michael Vaughan

During the same conversation, Michael Vaughan is confident about Joe Root breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record. Vaughan highlighted Root’s passion, commitment, and skill. He stated that he would be surprised if Root doesn't surpass Tendulkar in the elite list of batters.

"I think unless his back snaps, he is the most enthusiastic lover of the game. I don't think that's suddenly going to go away. He's obviously had the cap to see that," Vaughan said.

"It took a bit out of him, but he's obviously not involved with that anymore. He's just a player, a batter, rocks up. He knows his game more than ever before. I'd be amazed if he doesn't. I'll be totally honest with you. But absolutely staggered. He's playing beautifully," he added.

Root is currently 95 runs short of surpassing Alastair Cook to become England’s leading Test run-scorer. The 33-year-old is also 3,544 runs behind Tendulkar's record. England has six Tests remaining this year. England will play three matches against Pakistan and three against New Zealand.
