Jonathan Trott to reshape Sri Lanka Cricket after horrifying T20 World Cup 2026 exit

Jonathan Trott to become head coach of Sri Lanka: The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) is reportedly considering major decisions to reform the team, as they were ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2026 early. Sri Lanka is the co-host of the tournament, and many expected to see them in the semi-finals. But that did not happen as the team was ruled out of the title race.

It was disappointing for the entire nation, as the co-host, which played all of their T20 World Cup 2026 matches on their home soil, was knocked out of the Super 8. As soon as their race for the title came to an end, head coach Sanath Jayasuriya expressed his desire to step down from the responsibility. After the elimination, the former opener hinted at resigning from his job as the head coach to lead the team to glory.

Sanath Jayasuriya to be sacked

Jayasuriya remains as the coach of the National team, but a massive change is expected to happen soon as the cricket board is looking for other possible options as well. Jonathan Trott, the former Afghanistan head coach, appears as the frontrunner to replace Sanath Jayasuriya in the future.

According to media reports from Sri Lanka, Former Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott is reportedly a leading candidate to take over as the head coach of the Sri Lanka national cricket team. Trott, a former England international, recently stepped down from his position with the Afghan side after a successful tenure.

Behind the notable success of the Afghanistan cricket team in the past few years, the former England cricketer left his mark. Afghanistan was considered the dark horse in the T20 World Cup 2026. But they got eliminated only from the group stage. The team's heartbreaking exit from the tournament resulted in the departure of the head coach, Jonathan Trott, as well.

"Maybe the time's right, maybe it's not. I don't know, but I wish everyone the best in the future. I'm very thankful for getting the opportunity. I got the opportunity by chance, really. Graham Thorpe was supposed to be the coach and he unfortunately couldn't take up the role," Jonathan Trott told the media.

"The great joy for me in this job is being able to see the players develop off the field as well and lives change, not just on the field but the ability for players to change their families' fortunes and trajectory as a family and as a group of people", he further added.

The comments from Trott said how close he was with the players on and off the field. The Sri Lankan cricket team is going through a transition phase. A lot of young players are in the pipeline as well. They have the required talents to shine on the bigger stages, but need to be groomed. For this job, the former Afghanistan head coach can be the ideal person.
