Star England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow recently launched an attack on head coach Brendon McCullum, captain Ben Stokes, and director of cricket Rob Key. Bairstow said that the England national cricket team needs to bring genuine professional care back into their environment.
His comments came a day after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) reviewed their disastrous Ashes series loss. Despite suffering a humiliating overseas defeat against Australia, the board retained McCullum, Stokes, and Key. The Three Lions under Ben Stokes lost the Ashes 2025-26 by 1-4.
You Need the Care Back in the Game - Jonny Bairstow
Speaking to the British Broadcasting Corporation, Jonny Bairstow expressed frustration with the current leadership for discarding experienced cricketers. The Yorkshire batter also echoed similar sentiments recently shared by Liam Livingstone.
"You need the care back in the game. It is OK saying people care about things - no they don't. If you are in the system, you are in the system. As soon as you are out of the system, you are out of the system," Bairstow was quoted as saying by the BBC.
Bairstow was a key figure during the early phase of the Stokes-McCullum era but has not featured for England since 2024. He scored four centuries in his first four matches under the new regime in 2022.
However, a serious leg injury later that year disrupted his form. He returned during the 2023 Ashes but struggled to cement his place and was eventually dropped in 2024. His final appearance came against India in March 2024, which also marked his 100th Test for England.
There Is No Wonder He Has Been Injured - Jonny Bairstow Slams Mark Wood Selection
Jonny Bairstow said that England selected Mark Wood for the Ashes series despite the fast bowler missing the entire previous English summer while recovering from knee surgery. He added that this led to another physical breakdown after just one Test match.
“If people get a finger injury, fine, but you have got to be in the park. It’s OK playing four or five games a summer and missing the rest, but you aren’t backing things up and that’s why you get injured," Bairstow said.
“I feel for people like Woody. I feel massively for him. He bowls at 95mph and is expected to just come in, having not come off the back of any overs. There is no wonder he has been injured," he added.
You Become Comfortable, You Become Complacent - Jonny Bairstow
Following the Ashes review, Rob Key admitted that the leadership overvalued loyalty to underperforming batters like Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope. Bairstow said that a lack of external pressure leads to complacency in the current dressing room.
"As soon as you don't have people chasing you up your back side you become comfortable. When you become comfortable you become complacent, and when someone questions you directly you are not used to it because you are in an environment that is potentially not questioning you in a different way."
