The South Africa National Cricket Team has found a new batting star in Jordan Hermann. On Wednesday, September 9, Jordan Hermann played a record-breaking knock on his debut against Namibia.

It was a historic day for the left-handed batter. Hermann showed no fear against the Namibian attack and went on to smash 150 runs and helped South Africa to post a massive target in the first ODI. Amid this, Ricky Ponting predicts a tough future for ODIs amid T20 cricket’s rise.

Jordan Hermann, Tony de Zorzi put Namibia under pressure

The Namibia National Cricket Team won the toss and decided to bowl, but the move backfired badly against the South Africa National Cricket Team. Jordan Hermann and Tony de Zorzi completely changed the game with their huge 190-run opening partnership.

De Zorzi played an important supporting role with 72, while Hermann took his time before launching his attack on the Namibian bowler. He smashed his maiden ODI hundred in 101 balls and then continued to increase the pressure on Namibia.

The 23-year-old eventually reached the incredible 150-run mark in just 125 balls. His knock was laced with 17 fours and three sixes, which showed a perfect mix of timing, controlled aggression, and smart batting. Hermann's brilliant innings was finally ended on 150 from 126 balls.

Jordan Hermann’s dream ODI debut ends with historic 150

Ruben Trumpelmann got his wicket after Hermann tried to attack over the off side but ended up slicing the ball towards cover, where Louren Steenkamp took a brilliant catch. South Africa eventually finished on 348/6, leaving Namibia with a huge target.

Despite his dismissal, Hermann has scripted the history, as his 150 is now the joint-highest score by a batter on an ODI debut. Only Matthew Breetzke has scored 150 on an ODI debut, against New Zealand in Lahore in 2025. They were followed by Desmond Haynes with 148, Rahmanullah Gurbaz with 127, Mark Chapman with an unbeaten 124, and Colin Ingram with 124.

Namibia face huge World Cup challenge

Meanwhile, Namibia is getting a rare chance to test themselves against a full-member team. None of their current players has played an ODI against a full member, while the team last did so 23 years ago. This series could give them valuable experience.

Namibia also has a big ICC ODI World Cup 2026 challenge ahead. They are fifth in the eight-team CWC League 2 table with four games left. They need to beat the USA and UAE later this year to finish in the top four and reach the 2027 World Cup Qualifier.

If they fail, they will have to take the longer play-off route while also fighting to protect their ODI status. Amid this, Connor Esterhuizen and Lhuan-dre Pretorius make great gains in ICC T20I Rankings after South Africa’s tri-series win.

South Africa testing new options before ICC ODI World Cup 2027

On the other hand, South Africa is using this ongoing ODI series against Namibia to look at new options for their 2027 World Cup team. Unlike Namibia, they do not have the same qualification pressure, so these matches give several players a chance to impress.

South Africa have picked a stronger squad for the Australia ODIs later this month. Only Bjorn Fortuin and Tony de Zorzi have been picked from the squad that is facing Namibia, while Matthew Breetzke and Corbin Bosch will also play against Australia.

Yet, the ongoing Namibia ODI series is a big chance for the other players to put their names in the frame for the upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh and England.
