Jos Buttler ditches Gujarat Titans, forces franchise to sign Sri Lanka star for IPL 2025

In a recent development, Gujarat Titans (GT) cricketer Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The Shubman Gill-led team has roped in Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis as a replacement for the remaining matches in the marquee event.
Gujarat Titans were at the top of the IPL 2025 points table before the tournament was suspended on May 9. They’ll be hoping to continue their form when the league resumes on May 17. The Shubman Gill-led side is likely to be without several key players during the crucial playoff stage of the T20 tournament.
Kusal Mendis Likely to Replace Jos Buttler for Gujarat Titans
According to a Newswire report, Kusal Mendis is expected to join the Gujarat Titans for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season. The franchise approached Mendis as a replacement for Jos Buttler. Mendis, who recently returned from the Pakistan Super League (PSL), is likely to be included in the squad.
"Sri Lanka batsman Kusal Mendis is likely to join the Gujarat Titans for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season, according to cricket sources," the report read.
"Mendis, who recently returned after featuring in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), has reportedly been approached by the franchise following the unavailability of England star Jos Buttler. An official announcement is expected soon."
Jos Buttler Among Gujarat Titans Overseas Players Who Have Left India
Jos Buttler has been a key performer for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, amassing 500 runs in 11 games while batting at No. 3. The star batter is set to miss the remainder of the season due to national duty, having been named in England’s ODI squad for the home series against the West Indies beginning on May 29.
Following the suspension of the IPL on May 9 due to tensions between India and Pakistan, Buttler and Gerald Coetzee were the only Gujarat Titans' overseas players to leave the country. Meanwhile, Rashid Khan, Sherfane Rutherford, Kagiso Rabada, and Karim Janat chose to stay back with the Gujarat squad.
IPL 2022 Champions Gujarat Titans Set to Restart IPL 2025 Campaign on May 18
The IPL 2022 champions will resume their IPL 2025 campaign on May 18 with a clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Delhi. They are scheduled to play three more league matches.
Before the break, GT secured a thrilling three-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium - their first-ever victory at that venue. With eight wins from eleven games, they are at the top of the points table with 16 points and a net run rate (NRR) of +0.793.
GT were also the first team to restart training after the league's suspension. Their upcoming fixture matches against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 22 and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on May 25 will bee played at their home ground in Ahmedabad.
