Gautam Gambhir has hailed Rohit Sharma for his selfless leadership in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. India are currently at the top of the points table with 8 wins from 8.

The Men in Blue have been the most dominant team in the competition so far and have just blown the opposition away right from the start. In a competition where teams have scored runs for fun, not a single team has managed to touch the 300-run mark against India so far. Rohit Sharma has been receiving praise from all around for his leadership and Gautam Gambhir has lauded the India captain too.

The right-handed batsman has led his team from the front, scoring 442 runs, including a century and two half-centuries. However, it’s not just the runs that have impressed many, it’s the manner in which they were scored. Without caring for personal milestones, Rohit has ensured to give India a quick start and it has helped the middle-order batters to settle down.

“I have said this about Rohit Sharma already. Just laughing around with teammates and speaking well about them in the media doesn’t make you selfless. You can still be selfish by trying to look to score your runs. But it is the way you bat or bowl that makes you selfless,” Gautam Gambhir told Sportskeeda.

“Rohit said that the team is looking to play aggressively and he has led by example. If he wanted to, he could have easily scored a hundred in 25 overs. So he has been selfless by his actions and not just words,” he added.

Gautam Gambhir praises Rohit Sharma for backing Iyer:

Speaking further, Gautam Gambhir also praised Rohit for backing Shreyas Iyer who was facing criticism for his poor returns with the bat before bouncing back with back-to-back half-centuries against Sri Lanka and South Africa.

“A selfless leader also brings security in the dressing room. He said ‘Even if Shreyas wouldn’t have performed, I would have backed him.’ This is how you give confidence to the dressing room.

“If you drop someone after three games, the whole dressing room becomes insecure. This is the reason why India have been doing well as they have a leader who is calm and not obsessed,” said Gautam Gambhir.

Team India will take on the Netherlands in their final league game on Sunday (November 12) before playing the semifinal. The hosts are likely to face New Zealand for a place in the final.
