Star New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson is expected to miss the upcoming edition of the ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be played in India later this year. Kane Williamson suffered an injury during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, and scans revealed that he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which required surgery.

Kane Williamson was part of the Gujarat Titans (GT) squad in the IPL 2023. He landed awkwardly on his right leg while trying to save the boundary off Ruturaj Gaikwad in the tournament opener against the four-time champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He was subsequently ruled out of the tournament and returned to New Zealand for recovery and rehabilitation.

Kane Williamson said that he received support from both the Gujarat Titans and New Zealand Cricket after the injury. The New Zealand white-ball captain said that he is now focusing on surgery and starting rehabilitation as he is determined to get on the field as soon as possible.

“I’ve received great support over the past few days and want to thank both the Gujarat Titans and New Zealand Cricket for that. Naturally, it’s disappointing to get such an injury, but my focus now is on having the surgery and starting rehab.”

We Haven’t Given Up Hope – Gary Stead

New Zealand coach Gary Stead said that Kane Williamson’s injury is a major blow for him and the team. Stead said that they will hope for him to be part of the team for the World Cup, but it looks like that is not going to happen.

“You take Kane the player for a start, but then Kane the leader and the person he is within our group as well, it’s a huge spanner in the works for us. We haven’t given up hope that he might be right but at this stage it does look unlikely. Our first thoughts are with Kane at the moment, it’s a tough time for him, it’s not an injury you expect…it hits you pretty hard,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said.

Wicketkeeper batter Tom Latham led the team in white-ball formats on the few occasions when Kane Williamson was unavailable. Latham will lead the Blackcaps in both formats on the tour of Pakistan. The left-handed batter is the front-runner to lead the team if Kane does not recover before the marquee event.
