Former England batter Kevin Pietersen lashed out at the Jos Buttler-led team that suffered a 0-3 whitewash in the three-match ODI series. Pietersen said that he was "absolutely gobsmacked" after England did not hold enough practice sessions, adding that players cannot improve without practicing.
The visiting side suffered a 142-run defeat in the third ODI against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, February 12. India set a massive target of 357 after being asked to bat first. In response, England's middle order collapsed as they were dismissed for 214 in just 35 overs.
England Did Not Have ONE Team Practice Session - Kevin Pietersen
England's lack of preparation became a topic of discussion during their tour of India. The Indian team attended an optional net session in Cuttack before the second ODI, but the England team decided to stay back at their hotel in Bhubaneswar and opted for a golf session.
Writing on X (formerly known as Twitter), Kevin Pietersen said the England team did not have practice sessions following their defeat in the first ODI in Nagpur. He added that Joe Root was the only player to train in the nets after the loss.
"I’m sorry, but I am absolutely gobsmacked that England did not have ONE team practice session since losing the 1st ODI and losing the T20 series. How can this be? Seriously, how? I believe Joe Root was the only player to have a net this series, post-Nagpur. There isn’t a single sportsman on this planet who can honestly say, that they’d improve without practicing whilst they’re getting beaten," Kevin Pietersen wrote.
Heartbreaking For Any England Fan! - Kevin Pietersen
Kevin Pietersen was disappointed with the team's attitude, adding that they didn't make enough effort to help secure a win. The 104-Test veteran stated that losing is acceptable if the team is putting in their best effort. He stated that it was heartbreaking that England didn't train during the series.
"There also cannot be one player in that England side that can sit on the plane leaving India and saying to themselves, they did everything they can to try help their side win. And for that, I’m am actually incredibly sad this evening. Losing is fine if you’re giving your best to improve everyday and if England didn’t train during this series then they didn’t try. Heartbreaking for any England fan!"
Jos Buttler's Team Set to Kick Off Their Champions Trophy 2025 Campaign on February 22
England secured only one win on their eight-match white-ball tour of India, which came in the third T20I in Rajkot. India had two centurions in the ODI series, but England didn't manage to score a single century. Opener Ben Duckett was their highest run-scorer with 131 runs, including one half-century.
Jos Buttler and his team will begin their Champions Trophy 2025 campaign against Australia on February 22 in Lahore. England is in Group B alongside Australia, South Africa, and Afghanistan. It's worth noting that the England cricket team suffered a semi-final defeat against Pakistan in the 2017 edition.
