Former England superstar Kevin Pietersen has shared how the Indian Premier League (IPL) completely changed his life as a cricketer and how his friendship with Rahul Dravid became the turning point of his career ahead of the upcoming 2026 season.

Speaking on Jos Buttler’s “For The Love Of Cricket” podcast, Pietersen opened up about a difficult chapter of his life and how the IPL opened a door he never expected to save his career.

Kevin Pietersen reveals how the IPL transformed his career

Back in 2009 and 2010, Pietersen was part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team. During those two seasons, he became very close to Indian legend Rahul Dravid. At that time, Pietersen was struggling badly against left-arm spin, and then his front-foot style made things really tough for him.

And the former aggressive batter reached out to Dravid for help, and the Indian legend helped him. The Englishman credited his relationship with Dravid for his extended career.

Kevin Pietersen said on the podcast, "The biggest thing that transformed my career was my relationship with Rahul Dravid and the opportunity to call him when I was struggling with left-arm spin. When DRS came in, I was a front-foot player, and it just created a whole lot of drama in my life for 9 to 12 months. And the IPL gave me the opportunity to call Dravid and say, ‘Dude, I need help’.”

Friendship with Rahul Dravid became turning point for Kevin Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen further added, “The email that he sent me—he's just an absolute legend for doing that—I will again always be grateful for what the IPL gave me. It gave me a lot of controversy; I earned a lot of money there, but it also saved my career because I made relationships—trusting relationships—that I was able to call upon to give me that longevity in my career.”

Kevin Pietersen said that after spending time at Royal Challengers Bengaluru with legends like Dravid, Anil Kumble, Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Ross Taylor, and a young Virat Kohli, he realized that RCB was the perfect environment for him.

The former England star realized that if he wanted to grow, improve his game, and become the best version of himself, he needed to be in a dressing room filled with that level of talent and experience.

Kevin Pietersen recalls being criticised as ‘Money Hungry’ for playing IPL and his rift with ECB

Meanwhile, Pietersen also recalled how people used to attack him for wanting to play in the IPL, and even many were saying, 'He is money hungry.' He added that the same thing is normal for England players today, and everyone accepts that the IPL helps them improve.

The Englishman admitted that he got “paid a crazy amount of money” in the IPL, but he had never been allowed to make more money because the ECB kept pulling him back for Test cricket. This became the main reason for his fallout with the board.

Pietersen added, “They said, ‘You’re only allowed there for two weeks, and then you've got to come back and play the Test matches."

"And that caused, obviously, the biggest rift—that was the breakdown in my relationship with the ECB. But at that time, all I wanted to do was spend time with Dravid, with Kumble, with Kallis. And I used to watch Kallis prepare and I was like, ‘Gosh.’ Then I used to sit there next to Dravid on the bus and talk to him."
